If you are booking housing, count first date through last date.

School, college, and summer terms

A high-school year that is split into two semesters can look longer on paper than a college semester, because the school year itself is a long civil stretch with a different holiday pattern. There is no single high-school week-count that this page can stamp on every district. The district calendar is the source.

Summer “semesters” are often not full copies of fall. They may be a few weeks, or a pair of short sessions. How many weeks is in a semester, asked in July, may be pointing at that compressed term. The word semester on a summer flyer does not secretly restore 16 weeks of autumn.

The United Kingdom and some other systems still talk in terms rather than semesters, or they use both words. A term with twelve teaching weeks plus exams is not a failed 16-week semester. It is a different cut of the year. Importing a US figure onto that campus is the error.

A semester is a fence the school built. The week-count lives in that fence, not in the word.
