The civil year is fifty-two weeks plus leftover days. Those fifty-two weeks already hold 260 Mondays through Fridays: five weekdays times 52. The leftover days decide whether you pick up one more weekday, two, or none.

A common year has 365 days, which is 52 weeks and one extra day. That extra day is the weekday of 1 January, and it is also the weekday of 31 December. If that leftover day is Monday through Friday, the year has 261 weekdays. If it is Saturday or Sunday, the year stays at 260.

People also type how many weekday in a year and how many weekdays in a year. Those are the same count. Do not add Saturday. Do not subtract public holidays unless you asked for working days under a named country’s holiday list. “Weekday” on this calendar is the Monday–Friday column, not “a day I must go to the office.”

If the leftover pair is Monday–Tuesday, Tuesday–Wednesday, Wednesday–Thursday, or Thursday–Friday, both extras are weekdays and the year has 262. If the pair is Friday–Saturday, only Friday counts and the year has 261. If the pair is Saturday–Sunday, neither is a weekday and the year has 260. If the pair is Sunday–Monday, only Monday counts and the year has 261.

2028 is a leap year. It begins on Saturday, so the leftover pair is Saturday and Sunday. That leap year has 260 weekdays even though it is one day longer than 2026. Length in days and length in weekdays are different questions.

52 weeks already hold 260 weekdays. A common year adds one leftover day: 260 or 261 in total. A leap year adds two leftover days: 260, 261, or 262 in total. Public holidays are a later subtraction, not part of this count.

If you need “working days” for a payroll or a school, start from the weekday total and then remove the holidays that apply there. The calendar will not do that subtraction for you.

Count the extras, then stop

Find the weekday of 1 January. In a common year, that is the only extra. In a leap year, take 1 January and 2 January. Count how many of those extras sit in Monday–Friday. Add that number to 260. That is the year’s weekday total.

You can also count each weekday separately: a common year has 52 or 53 of each, a leap year 52 or 53 as well, with the extras sitting on the leftover days. Summing Monday through Friday must match the 260-plus method. If it does not, a day was counted twice or a weekend was smuggled in.

Fifty-two workweeks would be a tidy story. The leftover days are what keep the true count from being one number forever. Do not multiply 365 by five-sevenths and treat the fraction as a count of days. Weekdays are whole days. The honest answers are integers in a short range, not a decimal that pretends every year is identical.
