A semester is a slice of an academic year, not a slice of Earth’s orbit. How many semesters in a year depends on which year you mean and which institution you are counting. A January–December calendar can contain the spring of one academic year and the autumn of the next. Two is the usual design: a fall semester and a spring semester, with a winter break between them and a longer break in summer. Ignore marketing language such as “year-round opportunity” until you see whether summer has its own census date, exams, and credit load. If you are transferring, do not assume two semesters of credit equal three quarters without a conversion table from the registrar. The units are different lengths.

Workplaces that say “we’ll revisit this next semester” are borrowing school language. They do not have semesters unless they defined them. For a job, count quarters of the fiscal year or calendar months. For a child in school, use the school’s two (or three) terms and the holiday map that comes with them.
