How many planes crash a year is a measurement problem dressed as a blunt noun. “Crash” is not the word aviation safety files use as their main unit. The International Civil Aviation Organization defines an accident in Annex 13: an occurrence in operation that causes death or serious injury, or substantial damage, or a missing aircraft, between boarding with intent to fly and disembarking. Many accidents are not smoking holes. Some are runway events with substantial damage and everyone alive.

Even inside that definition, the year still needs a fleet. ICAO’s published safety reports for scheduled commercial operations of large aeroplanes (certified take-off mass over 5,700 kilograms) counted 66 accidents in 2023, including 1 fatal accident, and 95 accidents in 2024, including 10 fatal accidents. Those figures are for that scoped set of flights, reviewed in that programme. They are not general aviation, not military aviation, and not every light aircraft on a weekend.

A year with more flights can have more accidents in count and still a similar or lower rate per million departures. ICAO also publishes that rate. A headline that only shouts the count is dropping the denominator. How many planes crash a year, asked without the fleet and the definition, is asking for a stack of unlike years.

Name the year that has actually been closed and reviewed. Name the operations: scheduled commercial large aeroplanes, all commercial, general aviation, or something else. Name the unit: accident, fatal accident, hull loss — not the slang “crash” alone.

If you need risk, keep the rate per flights or hours, not a raw pile. How many planes crash a year will keep trending after a filmed wreck. One wreck is one occurrence. It is not the year’s file, and it is not last year’s file reused as a personality for the industry.

Accident, hull loss, and the word crash

A hull loss is an aircraft destroyed or damaged beyond economic repair. That is a damage outcome, not a synonym for “anyone died.” A fatal accident is an accident with a fatality from the operation as defined. You can have substantial damage and no deaths. You can have deaths and an aircraft that is still a hull someone will write off, or not. Stacking those words into one “crash count” without saying which you mean is how two honest tables disagree and both are right.

Investigations take time. A year-end news total is not the same object as a later validated table. If a case is still unclassified, an honest file leaves it out or marks it. A social count that includes every video does the opposite.

Sabotage, military action, and similar events are treated under their own rules in some statistical summaries of “operational” accidents. Read the exclusion list before you compare two decades.

Which fleet the year belongs to

Airline jets, cargo, commuter turboprops, business jets, training aircraft, helicopters, and amateur-built machines do not share one risk pond. General aviation accident counts in a country can dwarf that country’s airline accident count because the hours, the landing sites, and the rules differ. Importing an airline year into a small-plane argument, or the reverse, is a unit error.

Do not divide a commercial accident total by 365 and call it “a crash a day.” Flights are not spread as a flat daily average of wrecks, and most days in a large airline system have none. The calendar is not the safety system.

The year will give you a pile if you ask it badly. Ask for a defined accident in a named fleet, or you are counting headlines.
