Paid hours actually recorded, which is a history, not a norm. Do not treat 2,080 as a law of nature. It is a tidy product. A leap year does not automatically add 8 work hours unless your calendar says 29 February is a workday for you. A “work year” and a “calendar year” share a name and not a total.

If someone quotes one number for hours in a year, ask whether they mean the sky’s year or the job’s year. Those clocks are not the same length.
