How many full moons in a year

Usually twelve, sometimes thirteen. The mean time from full moon to full moon is about 29.53 days, so a 365-day year holds about 12.37 of them.

how many full moons in a year

How many full moons in a year is leftover-fraction arithmetic. Full moon is the instant when the Moon stands opposite the Sun in ecliptic longitude, so the near side is fully lit. The mean synodic month — new moon to new moon, and likewise full to full — is about 29.53059 days. A common Gregorian year is 365 days; a leap year is 366. Divide: 365 ÷ 29.53 is a little more than 12.36, and 366 ÷ 29.53 is a little more than 12.39. Every year therefore has at least twelve full moons. The leftover fraction is what sometimes admits a thirteenth.

2026 is a thirteen-full-moon year on the civil calendar used in most almanacs: full moons in January, February, March, April, two in May, then June through December. The extra May full moon is a monthly blue moon in the modern popular sense: the second full moon inside one calendar month. That label is a naming habit. It does not change the astronomy. The Moon did not turn blue. The month simply had room for two oppositions.

The leftover fraction is why “one per month” is a slogan, not a measurement. February is shorter than the synodic month, so it can miss a full moon in some years. A 31-day month can hold two. The year as a whole still lands on 12 or 13.

Mean full-to-full interval: about 29.53 days. Common year: 365 days, about 12.37 synodic months. Leap year: 366 days, still 12 or 13 full moons, not 14. 2026: 13 full moons in the usual civil listing, with two in May.

How many full moons in a year does not depend on whether you looked up. The opposition still occurs. Clouds are weather. They are not a deduction from the count.

Why the leftover fraction makes a thirteenth

Twelve synodic months are about 354.37 days. That is about eleven days short of a common year, or about twelve short of a leap year. Those leftover days accumulate. When a full moon falls early in January, there is room for twelve more before 31 December. When it falls late in January, the thirteenth may not fit, and the year stays at twelve. The pattern repeats on a longer lunar-solar beat; you do not need that beat to count one year. You only need the list of instants.

Seasonal “blue moon” talk (the third full moon of four in a season) is a different naming rule. It can disagree with the monthly rule. If you need a count of full moons, count oppositions. If you need a folk name, say which folk rule you are using.

The date depends on whose midnight you use

The instant is one instant worldwide. The calendar date is not. A full moon at 04:18 UTC on 28 August 2026 is still 27 August in US Pacific Time. October and December 2026 have the same kind of date-line walk depending on zone. A year count of 13 can still list different month-and-day numbers in Tokyo and in Los Angeles for the same Moon. If you publish a date, publish a time zone, or publish UTC and let the reader convert.

The disk looks full to the eye for more than that instant. “Looks full” on the night before is not a second full moon. Do not count a round appearance as an extra opposition. The measurement is the instant, or the civil date of that instant in a named zone, not every night you could have taken a postcard.

Thirteen full moons in a year is not the Moon showing off. It is 29.53 refusing to divide 365 without a remainder.

Questions and answers

Does every year have 12 full moons?
Every year has at least 12. Some years, including 2026 in ordinary civil listings, have 13.
What makes a thirteenth full moon?
The synodic month is shorter than a calendar month on average across the year, so an extra opposition can fit. In 2026 many calendars place that extra one as a second full moon in May.
Can the calendar date of a full moon differ by time zone?
Yes. The instant is global; the date stamp follows local midnight. Always name the zone if you need a date.
