How many fridays in a year

A common year has fifty-two Fridays, or fifty-three if Friday is the leftover weekday. A leap year also has fifty-two or fifty-three, depending on which two extra weekdays the extra day creates.

how many fridays in a year

How many fridays in a year is a calendar-count, not a mood. A common year has three hundred sixty-five days. That is fifty-two weeks plus one day. Those fifty-two weeks already contain fifty-two Fridays. The leftover day is one weekday. If that weekday is Friday, the year holds fifty-three Fridays. If it is any other weekday, the year holds fifty-two.

How many friday in a year and how many fridays are in a year ask the same count. Spelling does not change the week. Friday is the fifth day in the Monday-first office week and the sixth in a Sunday-first week. The name is what you are counting, not the number on a wall planner.

A leap year has three hundred sixty-six days: fifty-two weeks plus two days. You still start with fifty-two Fridays. The two leftover weekdays are consecutive on the calendar (they wrap across 31 December and 1 January only if you are mixing years; inside one leap year they are the two extra day-of-week slots created by the extra date). If Friday is one of those two, you get fifty-three Fridays.

Which years get the fifty-third Friday

In a common year, fifty-three Fridays occur when 1 January is a Friday, because the leftover single day is Friday and every week already contributed one. Equivalently, 31 December is a Friday in that same common year. In a leap year the extra day sits in February, which shifts weekdays after 28 February. Fifty-three Fridays then appear when Friday is among the two leftover weekdays of that 366-day year—typically when the year starts on Thursday or Friday, so Friday shows up in the leftover pair.

You do not need a rhyme. Open a calendar for the year you care about and count the Fridays, or look at 1 January and whether the year is leap. Counting is the measurement. Memory of “most years have fifty-two” is the usual case, not a law that forbids fifty-three.

Common year: 365 = 52×7 + 1 → fifty-two Fridays, or fifty-three if the extra weekday is Friday. Leap year: 366 = 52×7 + 2 → fifty-two Fridays, or fifty-three if Friday is one of the two extra weekdays.

Same question: how many friday in a year, how many fridays are in a year. Do not average across years and call the average “this year.” Friday does not work overtime. The calendar either has a spare weekday with that name, or it does not.

Paydays, schools, and the week that wraps the year

People ask this when they are counting paydays, classroom weeks, or “how often will we meet if we meet on Fridays.” Fifty-two meetings is the default. The fifty-third is a bonus Friday that some years simply contain. If your job pays every Friday, that year has either fifty-two or fifty-three such paydays. If a holiday sits on a Friday, you still had a Friday; you did not have a workday.

The year boundary can confuse a count that starts on a school calendar rather than 1 January. A school year that runs August to June is not “a year” in the calendar sense. It can contain a different number of Fridays than the January–December year that overlaps it. Say which span you are measuring. The phrase “in a year” on this page means a calendar year unless you name another span.

ISO weeks and Sunday-start planners do not add Fridays. They only change which box on paper holds the same day. Count names, not grid rows.
