Do not memorise a single gap. The gap changes every midnight. If today is 1 April, the wait to this year’s date is zero. If today is 2 April, the next 1 April is next year. If today is 1 March, you are counting through the rest of March.

March has 31 days. From 1 March to 1 April is 31 days. From 15 March to 1 April, count the leftover March dates after the 15th, then add 1 April. After the 15th there are 16 days left in March (16 through 31), plus 1 April, which is 17 days. The method is always: leftover days in the current month, plus full months in between, plus the first of April.

How many days until April 1 is the same question with the month name first. English allows both “1 April” and “April 1.” The civil date is identical. A countdown widget that uses one spelling and not the other is still counting to the same midnight, as long as the time zone is the one you mean.

1 April and April 1 are one date

Write the target as a year as soon as the current 1 April has passed. “Days until 1 April” without a year is this year’s date while it is still ahead, and next year’s date once you are on 2 April or later. People arguing about the count are often arguing about the year, not about April.

April 1 is also April Fools’ Day in many places. That is a custom attached to the date. It does not change how many days sit between today and 1 April. The joke arrives when the date arrives. The countdown is ordinary calendar arithmetic.

Same year, before April: leftover days this month + full days of later months before April + 1. On 1 April: 0 days until this year’s date; the next count is a year away. After 1 April: leftover days this month + the rest of the year + January + February + March + 1.

February in that year is 28 or 29 days; that is the only month whose length you must check when the span crosses it. If the span includes 29 February, the wait is one day longer than the same start-to-April path in a common year. From 1 March the leap day is already behind you, so 1 March to 1 April is still 31 days in both kinds of year.

Counting across month lengths

Month lengths are not equal, so “about a month” is a poor substitute for a day count. April itself has 30 days. If 1 April is still ahead this year, those 30 days are not part of the wait: you stop on the first. If 1 April has already passed, the wait to next year’s date does include the leftover days of this April, then May through December, then January through March, then 1 April.

Write today’s date, including the year. If the month-day is before 1 April, target this year; if it is 1 April, the answer is 0 for this year; if it is after 1 April, target next year. Add the leftover days of the current month after today.

Add each full month between now and the target, using 28, 29, 30, or 31 as that month actually has. Add 1 for 1 April, unless you are already on that date. If you start the count after 1 April, you are walking to next year’s first of April, not back to the one that already closed.

A paper calendar is enough. Mark today, mark 1 April of the correct year, and count the printed squares between them without counting today if you mean “days from now until,” which is the usual reading of “how many days until.” If you count both endpoints you will be one day high. That off-by-one is the usual argument, and it is a counting rule, not a property of April.
