How many days till dec 1 is a walk to the door of December, not a measure of December itself. December contains 31 days. The 1st is the first of those 31. “Till” stops at the threshold. It does not include 2 December through 31 December unless you asked for those later squares.

How many days until Thanksgiving Day is another holiday, on a different date, and in the United States it is not 1 December. Do not reuse 89 for those questions. They were never aimed at the first of the month.

Till 1 December: the opening square of the month. Till 25 December: Christmas Day, 24 days after the 1st in the same December. Till 31 December: the last square of the year, 30 days after the 1st. December’s own length: 31 days, leap year or not.

Till Dec 1 is a walk to the door. Once you are inside December, asking the same question is asking for next year, not for a second entrance in the wall.

The year box around the countdown

A common year has 365 days; a leap year has 366. 2026 is a common year. That fact is unused while both today and 1 December sit inside 2026. It becomes used when 1 December has passed and you count through 29 February of a later leap year on the way to the next 1 December.

If a form wants the number of nights until the 1st, use 89 from 3 September 2026. If it wants how many calendar squares sit in the range including both ends, use 90.
