The phrase faces two ways. Before the feast, people usually mean “how long until Christmas.” After the feast, they mean which day of Christmastide they have reached. Those are opposite counts. Name which one you want before you subtract.

Christmas Day is 25 December every year. In 2026 it is a Friday. The 113-day figure from 3 September is the number of days from this Thursday to that Friday. Tomorrow the figure is 112. The number is not a tradition. It is ordinary date arithmetic. Advent is a different clock: in 2026 it begins Sunday 29 November, four Sundays before Christmas, which is 26 days before the 25th, not 113.

Once 25 December has begun in your time zone, you are on day one of Christmas, not day zero. The Western “twelve days of Christmas” then run from 25 December through 5 January. Twelfth Night is kept on the evening of 5 January or, in some houses, on the eve of Epiphany. Epiphany is 6 January. Those twelve days are not twelve shopping days in December. They start when the shops have already sold the wrapping.

Counting toward 25 December

From a date before Christmas, subtract that date from 25 December, or add the remaining days of each month. From 3 September 2026 the remaining September days after the 3rd, plus October, plus November, plus 1–25 December, total 113. Do not count Christmas Eve as Christmas. 24 December 2026 is Thursday, the eve. It is one day before the feast, not a day “into” it unless your household opens gifts that night on purpose.

If today is before 25 December, you are days until Christmas, not days into it. If today is 25 December, you are on day one. If today is between 26 December and 5 January, count from the 25th: 26 December is day two, and so on.

If today is after Epiphany, you are out the far side unless your church keeps a longer Christmastide. Advent Sundays are a separate four-week count and do not replace 25 December. Workplaces that close on Friday 25 December 2026 are closing on the feast, not “into” a twelve-day public holiday. Boxing Day, where it is kept, is 26 December. In 2026 that is a Saturday. The United States does not make 26 December a federal holiday. England and Wales also list Monday 28 December 2026 as Boxing Day (observed). That observed Monday is a bank-holiday substitute, not day four of a U.S. feast.

Until 25 December you are counting toward Christmas. After it you are counting through it. Those are opposite directions on the same street.

Counting through the twelve days

Day one: Friday 25 December 2026. Day two: Saturday 26 December. Day three: Sunday 27 December. Day four: Monday 28 December. Keep walking until Tuesday 5 January 2027, which is the twelfth day if you started on the 25th. Wednesday 6 January is Epiphany. A house that takes the tree down on Boxing Day is not “wrong.” It is using a shorter season than the twelve-day count. A house that leaves lights until Candlemas on 2 February is using a longer church custom. Neither custom changes 25 December.

New Year’s Day sits inside the twelve days: Friday 1 January 2027, a U.S. federal holiday. That Friday is day eight if 25 December was day one. It is also its own feast. Do not let a New Year’s hangover erase the Christmas count or the Christmas date. They overlap. They are not synonyms.

If you asked the question in September, the honest answer is zero days into Christmas and 113 days until it, from 3 September. If you asked it on 28 December, the honest answer is day four, with Epiphany still ahead. Write the date you are standing on. The phrase will not do that work by itself.
