If you count “two years from a date” instead of “two numbered calendar years,” include or exclude the start date the same way you would for any other day count, then check whether a 29 February lies on the path.

One common year: 365 days. One leap year: 366 days. Two common years with no leap day between: 730 days. Any two-year span that contains one 29 February: 731 days. Why February is the month that grows

The calendar year is a civil counting tool. Earth’s trip around the Sun is a little longer than 365 days, so a 365-day year every year would drift relative to the seasons. The leap day is the correction. It is added to February, not sprinkled through the months, so eleven months can stay the same length.

You do not need the length of the tropical year to use the civil rule. You need the leap-year rule: a year divisible by 4 is a leap year, except a century year, which must also be divisible by 400. 2000 was a leap year. 1900 was not. 2100 will not be. 2028 is not a century year and is divisible by 4, so it has 366 days.

February is where the extra day hides. The other eleven months keep their lengths whether the year is leaping or not. If a form asks “days in a year” without naming the year, the honest short answer is 365 or 366. If it needs a number for a calculation, name the year or say which total you used. A spreadsheet that always multiplies by 365 will be wrong every leap year by one day, and that one day is a real date.
