The work is subtraction: the spring date minus today. For the northern March equinox, 20 March 2027 minus 3 September 2026 is 198 days. Weather offices in the north open meteorological spring on 1 March. From the same start that is 179 days before Monday 1 March 2027. Those two northern answers differ by 19 days because 1 March and 20 March are 19 days apart.

South of the equator the same English question is short in early September. Meteorological spring there already opened on 1 September 2026. Astronomical spring arrives at the September equinox, 23 September 2026, twenty days after 3 September. One sentence, a two-digit leftover in the south and a three-digit leftover in the north.

Northern spring 2026 is already behind you. The 20 March 2026 equinox was 167 days before 3 September 2026. After March, “days before spring” means the next spring, not the one that has ended.

Before the 90 days, and the 90, 60, and 30 day marks

People also ask for dates behind today: 90 days before today, 60 days before today, 30 days before today. From 3 September 2026 those marks are 5 June, 5 July, and 4 August 2026. None of them starts spring. In the north they sit in summer. In the south they sit in winter. They are lookbacks, not countdowns to a season.

“Before the 90 days” is the stretch older than that 90-day window. If a rule cares about the last 90 days, the window from 3 September 2026 opens on 5 June 2026. Anything dated 4 June 2026 or earlier is before the 90 days. A 120-day lookback would open on 6 May 2026 instead. Keep the arithmetic on days

Write both dates. Subtract. If the spring date sits earlier in the calendar year than today, the spring you want is next year’s. From September, northern March is always next year. Southern September can still be this year. That fork is the whole method.

Do not turn 198 days into “about six months” and then add six to September. Six months after 3 September is 3 March, which is 17 days before the 20 March equinox and 2 days after meteorological 1 March. Month sums and day sums disagree, and the question asked for days.

198 days is 28 weeks and 2 days. 179 days is 25 weeks and 4 days. 20 days is 2 weeks and 6 days. Week figures are a check. Dropping the leftover days lands you on the wrong weekday and the wrong date.
