How long is a light year
A light-year is not a length of time. It is the distance light travels through a vacuum in one year: about 9.46 trillion kilometers, or about 5.88 trillion miles.

The name combines a speed with a calendar-sized interval. Light moves through a vacuum at a fixed speed, and multiplying that speed by one year produces a distance. Astronomers use the result because ordinary road-scale units become awkward across interstellar space.
Calling it a “year” can make the unit sound temporal, but the complete phrase functions like “kilometer” or “mile.” It answers “how far?” A star described as several light-years away is separated from us by that many light-year distances.
Light-second: the distance light travels in one second. Light-minute: the distance light travels in one minute. Light-hour: the distance light travels in one hour. Light-year: the distance light travels in one year.
A light-year contains a year in its name for the same reason a yardstick contains a stick: the label is not the thing being measured.
How many years is a light year?
The question “how many years is a light year?” mixes distance with duration, so there is no direct conversion. One light-year does not equal a number of ordinary years any more than a kilometer equals a number of minutes.
If you ask how long light takes to travel one light-year, the answer is one year by definition. If you ask how long a spacecraft takes, you also need its speed. A slower object requires more than one year to cross the same distance, and its travel time can change if its speed changes.
This distinction also explains the phrases “one light year how many years” and “light year how many years.” They can be repaired by specifying the traveler: light, a particular spacecraft, or a hypothetical object moving at a stated speed.
Distance and looking into the past
Light takes time to reach an observer. When an object is one light-year away, the light arriving now began its journey about one year earlier. Seeing distant space is therefore also seeing earlier conditions, because the information has been traveling.
Read a light-year value as distance. Identify the speed of the traveler or signal. Divide the distance by that speed to find travel time. Keep the units consistent throughout the calculation. For light itself in a vacuum, the definition makes the relationship straightforward. For matter, practical travel involves acceleration, deceleration, available energy, and other constraints. Merely knowing that a destination is one light-year away does not provide an arrival date.
Calendar conventions can define the exact reference year used in formal calculations, but the rounded kilometer and mile values are sufficient for general explanation. The central point remains unchanged: the unit measures enormous separation, not someone’s age or a calendar interval.
