Christmas Day is 25 December every year on the civil calendar used in the United States and in most of the countries that ask this question in English. You do not need a feast table to do the arithmetic. Take today’s date, take 25 December of this year if that date is still ahead, and count the days between. After the 25th, the next Christmas is 25 December of the following year. Leap days do not move the 25th. They only change how many days sit in the year that contains them.

From 3 September 2026 to 25 December 2026 is 113 days. That is the number this page is for, on the morning it was written. Tomorrow the number is 112. The feast does not move when the count does. If you are asking in another year, do not reuse 113. Reuse the method: calendar days remaining, not shopping days, not “sleeps” that skip a nap, not a week of office parties counted as if they were the 25th.

What the count is, and what it is not

Remaining days are a subtraction. They are not a mood. “Soon” is not a number. Advent calendars with twenty-four doors are a December device, not a substitute for the full remaining count in September. Businesses that sell “shopping days until Christmas” are counting weekdays they care about, and they often stop at Christmas Eve. If you needed the civil date, those ads will short you.

Civil Christmas Day: 25 December, every year. From 3 September 2026: 113 days, and a Friday. After 25 December: start the count again toward the next 25 December. Time zones: they change when the 25th begins if you are calling someone in another country, not if you are counting on one kitchen calendar.

Other Nativity dates: some Orthodox parishes keep 7 January civil; that is a different remaining count. If the household keeps Orthodox Christmas on 7 January, say so and count to that morning. Mixing the two dates is how a family books a call for the wrong roast. If the household keeps 24 December as the main gift night, that is Christmas Eve. It is one day before the 25th, every year. It does not replace the 25th on the civil calendar and it does not change the remaining-day formula. You can count to Eve and to Day as two numbers. They will differ by one.

Counting the days will not make the 25th arrive sooner. It will only stop you from calling November “almost Christmas” while a whole month is still on the wall.

How to keep the number honest

Use the same clock you live by. A world clock is for a second household, not for padding. Do not count both ends: if today is the 3rd and Christmas is the 25th of a later month, the difference already is the remaining days. Adding one “for luck” is not a calendar. Subtracting Sundays because you do not work them is a work roster, not a Christmas count.

Write the date you counted from next to the number. A sticky note that says “113” with no date is a relic by breakfast. A countdown page or a paper calendar that crosses off squares is doing the same job as this paragraph, only slower. When the number hits zero, it is the 25th in your time zone. Then the honest new question is how long before the next one, which is a fresh subtraction, not a leftover from September.
