If today is 8 December, and you are a Latin-rite Catholic in the United States, the answer is yes: you are obliged to take part in Mass, unless a grave cause excuses you. Sunday is always a holy day of obligation as well. 8 December is one of the extra U.S. days of precept, with 1 January, the Ascension, 15 August, 1 November, and 25 December. When 8 December is a Sunday, U.S. practice transfers the Immaculate Conception so that the Advent Sunday is not displaced; follow that year’s ordo rather than last year’s memory.

8 December 2026 is a Tuesday. The precept stands. 8 December 2027 is a Wednesday. The precept stands. The United States does not lift 8 December when it falls on a Saturday or a Monday the way it lifts 1 January, 15 August, or 1 November. Christmas and the Immaculate Conception keep the obligation even beside a weekend, with the separate Sunday-transfer case above. Other countries keep other lists. England and Wales, Ireland, Canada, and Australia are not the U.S. table. Cross a border, ask that conference.

A holy day of obligation is a Mass you owe, plus rest from work that would block worship, as far as possible. It is not a U.S. federal closing. Banks run. Schools usually run. A parish may add a vigil Mass on the evening of 7 December. That vigil counts for the solemnity under the usual rules, the way a Saturday evening Mass counts for Sunday.

What 8 December is not

It is not Christmas. Christmas is 25 December, the birth of Jesus. It is not the Annunciation. The Annunciation is 25 March, the conception of Jesus. The Immaculate Conception is the teaching that Mary, from the first moment of her conception, was preserved from original sin. Pope Pius IX defined that dogma in the bull Ineffabilis Deus on 8 December 1854. The date of the definition and the date of the feast sit on the same square. Mix the conception of Mary with the conception of Jesus and you will keep the wrong month.

It is not Our Lady of Guadalupe. That feast is 12 December, four days later, a different title and a different story. It is not a day off work in U.S. civil law. You can go to Mass before a shift. You can go in the evening. Streaming from the sofa does not fulfil the obligation when you could have gone.

25 March: Annunciation, a different conception, a different solemnity. Every Sunday: already a holy day of obligation. December 8 is Mary’s beginning, not the manger. Arrive at the wrong feast and you will still be welcome, and still be late for the one you owed.

How the day is kept

Parishes print extra Mass times. Some dioceses treat the Immaculate Conception as a patronal feast of the United States, which is why the precept is guarded more tightly than All Saints on a Monday. Wear ordinary clothes. Go to the Mass you can reach. If you are ill, caring for an infant, or otherwise prevented, the law already knows about grave cause. Curiosity about a food calendar is not grave cause.

If you are asking “is today” on a date that is not 8 December and not Sunday, the U.S. Latin answer is no unless another solemnity of precept sits on that date. 3 September 2026, for example, is an ordinary Thursday. The next U.S. extra day of precept after early autumn is 1 November, then 8 December, then Christmas. Keep a current diocesan calendar. Do not let a bank poster answer a canon-law question, and do not let a parish bulletin answer a payroll question.

If you needed a civil holiday in December, look at Christmas. If you needed Guadalupe, wait until the 12th. If you needed this holy day, lock 8 December, find a Mass, and treat the rest of the weekday as work that has to make room for it.
