Holly day
Holly day is holly used as Christmas greenery, and a pun on the word holiday. The plant is Ilex, with spiny leaves and, on female plants, red berries. It does not name a public feast.
How it works
You cut or buy holly and put it where winter needs a sharp green: a wreath, a mantel, a table, a buttonhole, a church windowsill. English holly, Ilex aquifolium, is the picture most northern Christmas cards still use — dark, glossy, spiny leaves and red fruit. Other Ilex species are used where that shrub will not grow. The “day” in the search is the holiday sitting underneath the plant. There is no separate public holiday called Holly Day on the civil calendar. 25 December remains the feast. Holly is the trim.
The carol “The Holly and the Ivy” pairs the two evergreens that stay when deciduous trees are bare. Ivy climbs. Holly stands. Together they are old church-and-house winter green, later read with Christian symbols — the leaf’s prickle, the berry’s red — that not every household uses. You can hang holly with no theology attached. You can hang it in a church with all of it attached. The shrub does not mind.
Berries are only on plants that bear female flowers, and only if a male plant is near enough to pollinate. A holly bush without berries is still holly. A plastic sprig with moulded red dots is a stand-in. Both read as Christmas from across a room. Only one will root if you try to plant it in January.
Hang it, do not eat it
Holly berries are not food. They can make people and pets ill if eaten. Keep real berry sprigs up and out of the way of toddlers and of dogs who vacuum the carpet. Spiny leaves scratch. Gloves help when you wire a wreath. Cut stems sit in water like any woody green, or they are wired dry onto a frame. Indoor heat browns them. A cool hallway is kinder than a radiator shelf.
Wreath: holly mixed with fir or ivy, or holly alone if you want the spines to be the point. Mantel and table: short sprigs in a trough or laid on a cloth, away from candles. Door: a holly-heavy wreath on a hook; same latch rule as any other door dressing.
Buttonhole or napkin: one leaf and a berry, or a berry-free leaf if children will handle it. Outdoor holly in the garden is a shrub for the rest of the year. Birds take the berries. The plant is not “for Christmas” until you cut it. Cutting a few stems from a large bush in December is ordinary garden work. Stripping a small tree to make one wreath is how you have a bare stick in January. Artificial holly stores in a box. Real holly does not. Compost the real stuff when it yellows.
Holiday, holly day, and the date
Holiday is the everyday English word. Holly day is the same mouthful with the plant forced into view. Search engines treat them as neighbours. If you wanted a named feast for holly itself, you will not find a bank-closed Holly Day. Some churches bless greenery. That is a parish custom on a date the parish names, not a national day off.

White-berried hollies exist; they read as winter, less as the postcard. Variegated leaves show from further away in a dark hallway. Smooth-leaved cultivars are kinder on hands and less classic on a card. Pick the one you will actually handle.
Holly is a shrub that learned to look like December. The day is still the one on the wall. Take the cuttings down with the rest of the greenery. Dry holly sheds spines into carpets. A vacuum on Christmas afternoon is a poor extra feast. Next December the garden, or the shop, will have more. The pun will still work. The public holiday will still not be named after the bush.
