Holidays diwali
Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights, also called Deepavali. The main night is Kartika Amavasya: 20 October 2025 and 8 November 2026.
what is diwali
What is Diwali, and Diwali what is it, is a festival of lights kept on a lunisolar calendar, not on a fixed Gregorian number. Holiday Diwali and holidays Diwali are the same festival. Deepavali is the same feast under another common spelling. The principal night for many North Indian households is the Amavasya, the new-moon tithi, of Kartika. Lamps, household rites, and a cluster of surrounding days sit on that hinge.
Diwali 2025 falls on Monday 20 October. Diwali 2026 falls on Sunday 8 November. Those are the main Deepavali dates in the widespread Lakshmi Puja sense used on civil holiday lists. They are not a year-and-a-day apart on the same numbered day. The moon does not reuse 20 October as a pet date.
The festival is a cluster, not a single office Tuesday. Dhanteras, Naraka Chaturdashi, the Amavasya night, then Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj sit on consecutive tithis around that new moon. Local panchang timing can split a tithi across two civil dates, so a temple in one city may light lamps on one evening while a notice in another city names the next morning for a related rite. The moon, not a reused banner, is the source.
When Diwali is, and why it moves
When is Diwali is a year-specific question. When is Diwali 2025: 20 October. When is Diwali 2026: 8 November. Diwali 2027 is 29 October on the same civil lists. The typical Gregorian window is October or November. It is not always November. Do not memorise “the first Sunday in November.” 8 November 2026 happens to be a Sunday because that is the weekday of that new moon, not because Sunday is the rule.
Anchor: Kartika Amavasya. Diwali 2025: Monday 20 October. Diwali 2026: Sunday 8 November. Diwali and Deepavali: two names for the same feast. South Indian and some other regional calendars treat Naraka Chaturdashi as the heart of the celebration. In Bengal, Kali Puja falls on the same new-moon night. Sikh observance of Bandi Chhor Divas often coincides with Diwali. Those are not competing Gregorian inventions so much as different names on the same lunisolar hinge. If your household follows a regional main day, mark that tithi. A North Indian office poster does not referee.
Civil holidays and household nights
India’s public holiday table names Diwali (Deepavali) on the civil date for that year. That table is a roster of closures. It is not the whole ritual cluster. Travel and school breaks often cover a short block around the festival rather than one Monday. That block is a timetable choice. It can be longer than the household nights. It is not the definition of the feast.
Find the year you mean. Take that year’s Kartika Amavasya from a panchang or a civil holiday list. Mark adjacent tithis if you keep the five-day house. Do not copy last year’s numbered day onto next year’s wall.
A repeating phone alarm on 8 November will be wrong in a year when Kartika Amavasya falls in October. Set the year you care about after you have that year’s date. Western Easter also uses a moon; it does not track Diwali. Easter follows a spring full-moon rule. Diwali follows Kartika’s new moon. Two lunar rules, two seasons, two sets of dates.
The new moon will not keep 20 October as a souvenir to help you reuse last year’s banner. If you need a countdown, count to that year’s main night, not to “autumn” as a blob. After 20 October 2025 the next main night on these lists is 8 November 2026. After that, 29 October 2027. The feast is annual. The Gregorian number is not a habit.
