How it works

The phrase names a season of markdowns, not a public holiday of its own. In the United States the loudest holiday sale is usually before the feast: Thanksgiving weekend, including Black Friday, then a quieter after-Christmas clearance. 26 December is not a U.S. federal holiday. Shops that closed on the 25th reopen and mark down what did not sell. Gift cards and returns share the floor with the sale rack. Hours on the 26th are ordinary retail hours unless the chain posted a special opening.

In the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and other places that keep Boxing Day, 26 December is both a public holiday and the traditional start of the post-Christmas sale. The name comes from boxes of gifts or leftover food given to workers the day after Christmas, not from cardboard in a stockroom. Retailers there still treat the 26th as a planned shopping day. Online catalogues often open the markdown on Christmas evening, so the “Boxing Day” label can start while the feast table is still out.

After Christmas sales

After Christmas sales are the U.S. wording for the same late-December markdown. They are not a second Christmas. They are leftover stock, seasonal décor, toys, and winter clothes that the shop would rather not carry into January. Some tags stay up through the first week of the new year. A January sale can be the tail of the same clearance. Do not expect a single nationwide start time. Each retailer sets its own clock.

Read the shop’s own dates. A window sticker beats a rumour from last year. Separate returns from bargains. A gift receipt is not a coupon. Check whether 26 December is a public holiday where you are standing. In much of the U.S. it is a normal Friday or Saturday with open stores. In much of the Commonwealth it is a holiday with sale hours of its own.

If Christmas Day is a Friday, as in 2026, the 26th is Saturday. Weekend traffic and holiday-Monday rules (where they exist) both matter for parking, not for the legal name of the feast. In 2026, Christmas Day is Friday, 25 December. After-Christmas shopping therefore begins on a Saturday in the U.S. In Australia, 26 December 2026 is also a Saturday; several states add a substitute weekday rest when Boxing Day falls on a weekend. That substitute is a day off for many workers. It is not a promise that the deepest tag waits until Monday.

The sale you needed in November is still not cheaper because you waited until the wrapping paper hit the bin.

What a sale is not

A holiday sale is not a federal closing. It is not a countdown to 25 December; that count belongs to the feast. It is not Black Friday moved two months. Black Friday sits after Thanksgiving in the U.S. calendar. Boxing Day sits after Christmas. Using one name for the other date will send you to a dark car park.

If you are shopping from another time zone, the website’s “starts Boxing Day” means the shop’s local date. A U.S. evening on the 25th is already the 26th in Sydney. That is a clock fact, not a secret extra discount.
