Is bank holiday tomorrow is a local banking question, not a world clock. In the United Kingdom and in some other places, “bank holiday” is the usual name for a public holiday when banks close. In the United States the usual name is “federal holiday” or a named day such as Thanksgiving. Tomorrow is a bank holiday only if tomorrow’s date sits on that place’s holiday table and the banks there observe it. A London yes is not a New York yes.

Observed Mondays make this easy to get wrong. If the named day falls on a Sunday, many calendars move the time off to Monday. Tomorrow can be the observed day even when the named anniversary was yesterday. The inverse also happens: tomorrow can be the anniversary, and the day off can already have been taken. Read the observed date, not only the traditional date.

Schools, post offices, markets, and private shops do not share one switch. A bank holiday can close a branch and leave a supermarket open. A religious feast can fill a street and leave the bank staffed. If the errand needs a teller, the bank table is the one that matters. Tomorrow a holiday and tomorrow holidays are the same practical ask: will the next civil day be off where I am? Pull the public-holiday list for that jurisdiction, then look at the next date. If you travel overnight, look at the destination’s list, not the one you are leaving. A midnight landing can turn “tomorrow” into a different country’s today before you sleep.

What day is tomorrow is a simpler question: it is the weekday after today, in the time zone you are using. What day is it tomorrow is the same question with extra words. Neither question is a holiday question. Monday after Sunday is still Monday when Monday is also Labour Day, and it is still Monday when it is not. First name the weekday. Then ask whether that weekday is off.

Weekday of tomorrow: today’s weekday plus one, in your zone, wrapping Sunday to Monday. Holiday tomorrow: that date on a named public-holiday list, including observed shifts. Bank holiday tomorrow: that date on the banking calendar for that country.

School tomorrow: a third list. Do not copy the bank answer onto a report card. If today is Friday, tomorrow is Saturday. Saturday is a weekend day for many offices and still a working day for many shops. A weekend is not automatically a holiday. A holiday can sit on a Wednesday. Mixing “I am off” with “the country is off” is how a visitor finds a locked museum on a random Thursday and an open office on a Sunday market day.

How to get a yes or no you can use

Name the place. Name the kind of closure. Then read tomorrow’s date against that list. A phone widget that only paints a pink square without a country is guessing from a default locale. Check the locale. A United States phone on a trip to France will still think in the American table until you change it.

Write the date if anyone else has to act on it. “Tomorrow is a holiday” in a message sent at 23:50 is already almost today for the reader in the next zone. “Tuesday 4 March is a public holiday here” survives the night. The word tomorrow does not.

If you are planning a payment, a bank holiday tomorrow means a posting delay until the next business day, which may be two or three calendar days later if a weekend sits in between. If you are planning a parade, the holiday is the event. Those two uses of the same word do not share a checklist. Pick the one you meant, then look at the list that matches it.
