Holiday oct 13

October 13 is a U.S. holiday only in years when the second Monday of October falls on that date. In 2026 that federal Monday is 12 October, so the 13th is an ordinary Tuesday.

How it works

People type holiday oct 13 and oct 13 holiday when they want to know whether to plan a closed bank, a long weekend, or a school day. The United States does not put a federal holiday on the thirteenth as a fixed square. The October federal holiday is the second Monday of the month, named Columbus Day in federal law. Many states and cities mark the same Monday as Indigenous Peoples’ Day, or they mark both names. The Monday moves between 8 October and 14 October. Some years it is the 13th. Many years it is not.

In 2025 the second Monday was 13 October, a Monday, and that year the federal rest sat on the thirteenth. In 2026 the second Monday is 12 October. Tuesday the 13th does not inherit the Monday. There is no “observed Tuesday” rule that slides Columbus Day one square later. If you are looking at a 2026 planner and circling the 13th because last year was a Monday, you are circling the wrong day.

What actually closes on the October Monday

On the second Monday, federal offices and the U.S. Postal Service follow the federal list. Banks that follow the Federal Reserve holiday calendar typically close. The stock market stays open on Columbus Day. Grocery stores, pharmacies, and most private shops stay open unless the owner chooses otherwise. Schools follow the district, not a national school statute. State offices follow the state: some close for Columbus Day, some close for Indigenous Peoples’ Day, some treat the Monday as an ordinary workday.

Name the year. The Monday is not glued to the 13th. Name the place. Federal rest is one list; state rest is another. Name the thing you need: mail, a courthouse, a classroom, a shop. They do not all close together.

If today is already past that Monday, the next one is next October, not “sometime this week.” If last year’s Monday was the 13th, this year’s 13th still has to earn the Monday on its own.

Other marks on October 13

The date 13 October is also the birthday of the United States Navy, from 1775. That is a service anniversary, not a banking holiday. The United Nations marks 13 October as the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction. That is a calendar theme, not a day off. Neither of those turns a Tuesday into a federal rest.

Christopher Columbus’s 1492 landfall is remembered on 12 October in the older date, and on the second Monday in U.S. civil life since the Uniform Monday Holiday Act. Mixing the landing date, the Monday, and the number 13 is how this search gets noisy. Ask “is the second Monday this year the 13th?” and the fog lifts.
