Holiday bowl
The Holiday Bowl is a college football bowl game in San Diego. It is a postseason date in late December or early January, not a public holiday and not a dish.
How it works
Two university teams meet after the regular season. The bowl sells tickets, names a kickoff, and picks a broadcaster for that year. Conferences that send teams have changed as college football realigned. What does not change without a notice is the host city: San Diego. You watch a football game in a stadium, not a civic feast day.
The Holiday Bowl began in 1978 in Mission Valley at the stadium later known as San Diego Stadium and Qualcomm Stadium. After that ground closed, the game had a short stay at Petco Park. It now uses Snapdragon Stadium, back in Mission Valley on the site of the old bowl home. Venue history is a San Diego story. It is not a reason to treat the bowl as if it moved to another sport.
The 46th Holiday Bowl was Friday 2 January 2026 at Snapdragon Stadium, the first time the game had been placed in January. Kickoff that year was listed at 5:00 p.m. Pacific time. Dates for later editions are posted by the bowl; they are not a fixed feast like 25 December. Confirm the year you mean on the bowl’s own notice before you buy a flight.
Where the game is played
Snapdragon Stadium is a college football ground in Mission Valley. It is not Petco Park. It is not the demolished Qualcomm bowl. If a memory of downtown baseball seating is what you packed for, you packed for a previous edition. Transit, parking, and gate times are stadium problems. They change with the host’s plan for that kickoff.
A parade and other side events have been part of some Holiday Bowl weeks. Those extras are scheduled by the organisers for that edition. They are not automatic every December. A parade you remember from another year is not a ticket to this year’s game.

From 3 September 2026, 25 December 2026 is 113 days away and is a Friday. That Friday is Christmas Day. It is only the Holiday Bowl if the bowl published that date, which it does not use as a rule. Treat football and the feast as two calendars that share a month.
The Holiday Bowl is a kickoff in San Diego. If you needed a public holiday, you wanted a different kind of bowl.
