Hmong new year
Hmong New Year is the Hmong harvest new year, often called Noj Peb Caug. It is not Chinese New Year. Communities set their own dates, usually after the crop is in.
what is chinese new year
Chinese New Year is Spring Festival: the first day of the first month on the Chinese lunisolar calendar. It lands on a new moon between late January and mid-February. In 2026 that morning was Tuesday, 17 February, the start of a Horse year. The next one is Saturday, 6 February 2027, a Goat year. Reunion dinner, red paper, and a public holiday block inside China sit around that new moon. That is a Chinese festival with a Chinese calendar rule.
Hmong New Year is a different festival, kept by Hmong communities. The Hmong are an ethnic group with homelands in the mountains of southern China and mainland Southeast Asia, and with large diasporas, including in the United States. Their new year is traditionally a rest after harvest, not the Chinese first lunar day. People type “is today Chinese New Year” and “is today China new year” into the same box that found this page. On 3 September 2026 the answer to those two questions is no. The answer to “is today Hmong New Year” is also no unless a named community is holding its festival on this Thursday, which ordinary autumn weekdays in the United States usually are not.
Sharing a region of Asia with Chinese neighbours does not merge the two calendars. A Hmong household may also greet Chinese friends at Spring Festival. That is courtesy. It does not make Noj Peb Caug into Chunjie.
What the Hmong year actually marks
Noj Peb Caug is often explained in English as “eat the thirtieth”: a stretch of meals at the turn of the traditional year. Timing follows local lunar custom and the agricultural year. In Laos, Vietnam, Thailand, and southern China, celebrations commonly fall in December or January, sometimes spilling from late November, and they are not the same weekend in every village. Villages stagger their gatherings so kin can travel. There is no single worldwide square that is “the” Hmong New Year the way 25 December is Christmas.
In the United States, public festivals are often booked on autumn or early-winter weekends so people can come after work and school. Fresno, California, and St. Paul, Minnesota, are among the cities known for large public gatherings. Those weekends are event dates. They are not a federal holiday. Banks stay open. The traditional household rites — cleaning, new clothes, offerings, visiting elders — still belong to the families who keep them, whether or not a civic center is rented.
Hmong New Year: harvest new year, community-dated, not Spring Festival. Chinese New Year 2026: 17 February. Next: 6 February 2027. Typical season in the old agricultural year: after harvest, often November to January.
U.S. public versions: weekend festivals by local organisers, not a national close. This September Thursday is not Spring Festival and not a typical Hmong festival weekday. A harvest new year is dated by the clan and the field. Beijing’s Spring Festival notice does not get a vote.
Clothes, the ball toss, and the hall
New or newly finished clothing is part of the day. Embroidery, batik, indigo, hemp, and silver vary by subgroup — White Hmong and Green Hmong among them — and by family. The clothes are identity, not costume-shop decoration. Visitors who are not Hmong should not treat the hall as a dress-up booth.
Pov pob is the courtship ball toss: two lines, a cloth ball or a tennis ball, talk while the ball travels. Dropping it is a joke, not a crime. It is a way unmarried people meet in public. It is not a sport with a national ranking. Qeej music, dance, and, in some places, games such as spinning tops sit beside it. Food is rice, chicken, and whatever that family actually cooks. This page will not invent a menu as if every table used the same pot.
If you were invited, ask the host for the dress, the time, and whether the event is a household rite, a public festival, or both. If you were searching because a poster said “Hmong New Year this weekend,” believe that poster’s city and dates, not a national template. After that weekend, the next gathering is another community’s weekend, not a leftover Monday.
