Chinese New Year is Spring Festival, the Chinese form of that lunar turn: first day, first month, family travel, reunion meal on the eve. It is the traditional year-change for Chinese households and for the twelve-animal cycle. 2026’s first day was a Tuesday in February and opened the Horse year. 2027’s first day is a Saturday in February and opens the Goat year. The civil new year on 1 January is a different party with a different countdown.

English signs that say Lunar New Year are often trying to name the shared season without forcing every neighbouring festival into the word Chinese. The moon is related. The tables are not copies. Korean Seollal, Vietnamese Tết, and Chinese Spring Festival can fall on the same new moon and still keep their own food, greetings, and house rules. “Happy Lunar New Year” is a wide English umbrella. It is not a merger of those households into one franchise.

If you know the person keeps Spring Festival, the specific Chinese wish is still in order. If you know they keep Tết or Seollal, use the greeting they use. The wide English line is a polite default when you do not yet know which table you were invited to, not a correction of their name for their own day.

The moon, not the ball drop

Lunar months follow the moon, so the first morning moves on the Gregorian chart. That is why the greeting has no single printed date you can tattoo on a mug for every year. Late January in one year, mid-February in another. The range is the winter-to-spring new moon that starts the first month, not a Monday rule and not 1 January.

Inside China the public holiday block around Spring Festival is published for that year. That block is a work timetable. It is not the definition of the festival. The festival is the lunar date. A workplace that is already back at the desk can still be in the first lunar month. A street that is still red in week two is still in the season even if the official leave has ended.

Chinese Spring Festival 2026: 17 February, Horse year. Chinese Spring Festival 2027: 6 February, Goat (Sheep) year. Gregorian new year: 1 January, every year, different greeting. Lunar New Year in public English: the season, not a third calendar you must invent.

The kindest lunar greeting is the one that matches the table you were invited to. A wide English banner is a courtesy. It is not a rename of someone else’s festival.

How to keep the wish honest

Send the message on the eve or in the first days if you can. A note on 3 September 2026 that says Happy Lunar New Year is months late for 2026 and months early for 2027. It can still be a kind hello. It is not the festival. Do not treat leftover lanterns in a mall as proof that the year has not started; the year started on the new moon whether the mall took the paper down or not.

Do not staple the wish to National Day on 1 October. That date is a state anniversary of the People’s Republic of China. It is autumn. It is not a lunar new year. Do not staple it to the Mid-Autumn Festival either: in 2026 that full-moon date was 25 September, a different lunar month with its own food.

If you are writing a workplace banner, pick one phrase and one date range, then leave the other festivals their own signs. Stacking every Asian winter holiday onto one “lunar” poster is how none of them is named. Happy Lunar New Year can be the heading. The subhead should still say which community’s week you are marking, or admit that several weeks share the moon.
