Guy fawkes day
Guy Fawkes Day is 5 November in Britain and some Commonwealth places. It marks the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. It is Bonfire Night, not a UK bank holiday, and it is not 11 November.
How it works
On 5 November 1605, Guy Fawkes was found with gunpowder in a cellar under the House of Lords. The plot was to blow up Parliament and King James I. It failed. The date became an annual commemoration: bells, bonfires, and later fireworks. The rhyme “Remember, remember the fifth of November” is a calendar hook, not a statute. Children grew up burning an effigy called a guy. The night is also called Bonfire Night and Guy Fawkes Night.
England, Wales, Scotland, and Northern Ireland do not treat 5 November as a bank holiday. Shops, banks, and schools run an ordinary weekday unless 5 November is already a Saturday or Sunday. The fire is in the evening. The office is in the morning. That is why a visitor who planned a “Guy Fawkes Day off” can find the high street open and the park full of smoke after dark.
Some towns hold the bonfire on the nearest weekend for safety and attendance. The historical date remains 5 November. A Saturday display on the 4th or the 6th is still Bonfire Night in speech. It is not a second legal holiday. Check the local event page for the lighting time, not a federal-style observed-Monday table. There isn’t one.
What the night is, and what it is not
It is not Remembrance Day. That is 11 November, six days later, with silence and poppies rather than fireworks. Stacking both into “November fire” is how people miss the two minutes at eleven. It is not Halloween on 31 October, even though both involve night and costumes in neighbouring weeks. It is not a US holiday. An American calendar that ignores 5 November is not broken; the plot is English history.

Safety is the modern rule of the date
Organised displays have taken a lot of the backyard rocket. Local councils publish firework codes, animal-welfare notes, and fire bans when the ground is dry. A date that began as a political warning is now, for most families, a ticketed field and a baked potato. If you keep a household bonfire, you are under ordinary fire law, not under a festival exemption. Sparklers are still hot metal. The rhyme does not make them toys.
Lewes and a few other towns are famous for large processions. Those are local traditions with their own marshals and road closures. Copying a Lewes procession in a suburban cul-de-sac is not required by 1605. Staying off closed roads is. If you are travelling to a named bonfire town, read that town’s traffic notice for that year.
Food attached to the night — toffee apples, parkin, baked potatoes — is custom, not liturgy. Eat them or don’t. They do not prove you understood the plot. The plot was a failed assassination of a king and a parliament. The party is what survived in the street.
