Groundhog day results
Groundhog Day results are the folklore reading on 2 February: a shadow means six more weeks of winter; no shadow means an early spring. It is ceremony, not a forecast, and not a federal holiday.
How it works
The civil date is fixed: 2 February every year. In Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania, handlers bring Punxsutawney Phil to Gobbler’s Knob around dawn. If the story says he sees his shadow, the scroll calls for more winter. If it says he does not, the scroll calls for spring to come early. The Inner Circle translates the bit for the crowd. The date does not move to a Monday package. Banks stay on ordinary hours unless something else closed them.
The custom sits on the same square as Candlemas and is kin to older European weather lore about a hibernating animal and a midwinter sun. German-speaking settlers carried a version of that lore into Pennsylvania. The Punxsutawney event is the one most search pages mean. Other towns run other animals on the same date. Their scrolls can disagree. That disagreement is part of the joke, not a second meteorology bureau.
2 February 2026 was a Monday. 2 February 2027 is a Tuesday. The results, when they exist, belong to that morning. They do not slide to the following weekend for convenience. If you need the live reading, you need that dawn, or a recording of it. A recap published on 3 February is already a report of yesterday.
What the 2026 result said
On 2 February 2026, Punxsutawney Phil’s handlers said he saw his shadow. In the folklore, that is six more weeks of winter. That is the result this page can report for that year. It is not a verdict on March temperatures, and it is not a close of schools. By 3 September 2026 that ceremony is already months past. The next Gobbler’s Knob reading is 2 February 2027.

The 1993 film Groundhog Day used the town and the date as a loop, not as a weather service. Rewatching the film is not the result. The result is the scroll from the knob, or from whichever local animal your town prefers. Do not mix the plot with the ceremony on a timesheet. Neither one is leave.
Other towns, other animals, same square
Staten Island, Wiarton, and many smaller festivals name their own groundhogs or stand-ins. On a cloudy morning one town can call early spring while Punxsutawney calls for more winter. If you searched “Groundhog Day results” without a place, you probably wanted Phil. If you wanted your county fair’s woodchuck, say the town. The civil date is shared. The scroll is not.
Meteorological winter in the north is often counted as December, January, and February. Astronomical winter runs until the March equinox. Six weeks after 2 February lands near that equinox, which is why the folklore’s “more winter” and the sky’s season clock can look as if they were designed together. They were not a scientific instrument. A sunny 2 February is, in the story, a shadow day. A grey 2 February is how the story gets an early spring. Actual March still does what it does.
A shadow at dawn on 2 February is theatre. March files its own weather report. If you are planning travel to the knob, treat it as a pre-dawn outdoor gathering in February, with its own crowd and road rules, not as a holiday that empties a workplace. Dress for cold. The result is a sentence. The wait is the night.
