Grocery stores open on xmas day
Most major U.S. grocery chains close on Christmas Day, 25 December. A few regional stores and many convenience shops stay open. Hours are local; read the locator for that address before you drive.
what stores open for christmas
What stores open for Christmas is a wider question than groceries alone. On 25 December, a U.S. federal holiday, large supermarkets, warehouse clubs, and many big-box grocers typically go dark. Pharmacies, convenience stores, and some restaurants often keep a window. The mix changes by city and by year. A list from last Christmas is a clue, not a lock. The only hours that count are the hours posted for the store you can reach that morning.
Christmas Eve, 24 December, is a different day. Most grocers stay open on the Eve with a short schedule, then close on the Day. Shop the 24th if you can. Treat the 25th as a closed supermarket unless you have already confirmed an exception. In 2026 the 25th falls on a Friday, so the usual supermarket close is a Friday close, not a weekend bonus shopping day.
What usually shuts, and what sometimes does not
Pattern, not a promise for every door: national grocers such as Walmart, Target grocery, Kroger and its family of banners, Aldi, Publix, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, Costco, Sam’s Club, and similar warehouse clubs have closed on Christmas Day in recent years. Many regional chains do the same. Employees get the civil holiday. The dairy case waits until the 26th.
What sometimes stays open: convenience stores such as 7-Eleven and some travel plazas; some drugstores with a front end that sells milk and bread; and, in some regions, selected Albertsons or Safeway stores on a reduced clock. Independents set their own hours. A corner market in one neighborhood can be open while the supermarket two miles away is dark. Gas station food is not a full grocery run, but it is often the honest 25 December option for milk, ice, or a missing ingredient.
Plan the real grocery trip for 24 December or earlier. On the 25th, expect supermarkets closed unless you have checked that store. Convenience stores and some pharmacies are the usual backup for small needs.
Call or open the chain’s locator the same week. Last year’s hours are not this year’s hours. Christmas morning is a bad time to discover that the only thing open is a window of chips. The Eve is the shopping day; the Day is the cooking day.
How to not need a store on the 25th
Write the meal before the 24th. Milk, bread, butter, eggs, a lemon, aluminum foil, and the one spice you always forget are the usual gaps. Buy them while the supermarket is still in its ordinary winter hours. If you are feeding people who arrive on the 25th, shop for their breakfast on the 24th. If you keep kosher, halal, or another kitchen that the big chains handle poorly on a short Eve, shop earlier in the week. Short Eve hours mean crowded aisles, not extra stock.
If you do need a store on the Day, search the banner plus the city plus “Christmas hours,” then confirm on the store’s own page. Do not trust a map pin that still shows Monday’s schedule. A “open now” label on a holiday morning can lag. If the door is locked, the next supermarket is probably locked too. Try a convenience store, a hotel shop, or a restaurant that posted a Christmas service.
From 3 September 2026 there are 113 days until Friday, 25 December. That is enough time to put the Eve on a list. The count does not keep the milk cold. The shopping bag on the 24th does.
