German days of the week

German days of the week are Montag, Dienstag, Mittwoch, Donnerstag, Freitag, Samstag or Sonnabend, and Sonntag. They are the same seven civil days with German names.

how many week days in the year

How many week days in the year depends on what you mean by weekday. If you mean the seven named days, every Gregorian year contains all seven. If you mean Monday through Friday, start from fifty-two full weeks. Fifty-two times five is 260. A common year then has one leftover date; a leap year has two. Each leftover that lands Monday through Friday adds one to that 260. The Monday-to-Friday total therefore moves between 260 and 262. There is no single tally that fits every year.

Name the year before you name the number. A common year has 365 dates, which is 364 plus one. A leap year has 366, which is 364 plus two. The leftover dates are extra copies of whichever names they fall on. Saturday and Sunday still count as days of the week; they simply sit outside the five-day office filter. Do not memorise “260” as if it were vocabulary. It is arithmetic for one reading of “weekday,” and it fails some years.

German labels do not change that pile of dates. Switching the heading to German does not add an eighth weekday and does not delete Freitag. Learn the words. Then count the year you actually mean. Mixing “how many” with “what are they called” is how a student stores 261 as if it were a seventh name.

Write whether the year has 365 or 366 dates. Write the weekday of 1 January. The remainder after 364 is how many names get a 53rd visit. Those names start at 1 January and walk forward through the leftovers.

Days of the week in German, in order

Days of the week in German, from Monday, are Montag, Dienstag, Mittwoch, Donnerstag, Freitag, Samstag, Sonntag. That Monday-first order is the usual German planner and the ISO week. A Sunday-first English wall grid still holds the same seven names; only the leftmost column moves. Place Montag in the Monday cell, not in whichever cell is leftmost.

Samstag is the Saturday word most learners meet, and the one used widely in the south and west. Sonnabend is another Saturday word, heard more in the north and east. Both mean Saturday. Neither is a bonus weekday. Sonntag is Sunday. Mittwoch is Wednesday: the middle of the week, which only feels middle if you start the week on Monday. That is a mnemonic, not a weather forecast.

Days of the week German learners copy onto flashcards should keep German nouns capitalised. Montag is a noun, so it takes a capital in German even in the middle of a sentence. Copying a lowercase monday into German is an English habit the spelling does not want. Pronunciation is a separate drill: the -tag ending is the “day” piece on most of the names; Mittwoch is the odd one out, built from “mid” and “week.”

Putting the names in a sentence

On Monday is am Montag. On Tuesdays, as a habit, can be montags, a lowercase adverb, which is not the same as the noun Montag. Ich arbeite am Freitag means you work on Friday. Heute ist Donnerstag means today is Thursday. The article and the preposition are part of the sentence, not extra weekdays. Do not glue English “on” in front of Montag and call it German.

Mittwoch is the middle only if your week begins on Monday. The word will not move if your wall calendar still starts on Sunday. Weekend language sits beside the seven names: das Wochenende is the Saturday–Sunday pair. Wochentag in everyday talk often means a working day, not “any named day.” If a form asks for Wochentage, read whether it wants the seven names or the office five. The flashcards and the leftover-day tally belong on separate lines so a leap year does not look like new vocabulary.

Questions and answers

What are the seven German names from Monday?
Montag, Dienstag, Mittwoch, Donnerstag, Freitag, Samstag (or Sonnabend), Sonntag.
Is Sonnabend a different day from Samstag?
No. Both are Saturday. The choice is regional, not an eighth weekday.
Does using German names change how many weekdays a year has?
No. The year still has 365 or 366 dates. Only the labels on those dates change.
