Georgetown day
Georgetown Day is not a U.S. public holiday. The name is a campus community day at Georgetown University, and separately the name of a school in Washington, D.C.
How it works
At Georgetown University, Georgetown Day is a dated set of campus events, not a federal Monday off and not a D.C. government close. The university has marked it since 2000, after a student death involving drinking, as a community day with scheduled activities. It is a class day unless a professor says otherwise: the current student notices tell Hoyas to attend classes that meet. Residence-hall access rules can tighten for the date. None of that closes a bank in Foggy Bottom.
In 2026 the university set Georgetown Day on Friday, 24 April. On 3 September 2026 that Friday has already passed. The next date is the university’s to announce. Do not copy 24 April forward as if it were Christmas. A community day that moves is still a community day. It is not a statute.
Georgetown Day School is a different institution: a PK–12 independent school in Washington, D.C., founded in 1945 as the city’s first racially integrated school. The words “Georgetown Day” in that name are the school’s name, not an annual civic holiday. A school calendar of breaks belongs on the school’s own page for that year.
Campus day versus city holiday
Washington, D.C. public holidays follow the federal list plus local observances the District publishes. Georgetown Day is on neither list. The Georgetown neighbourhood can be busy on a spring Friday because of students, visitors, and ordinary tourism. Crowds are not a legal close. If you needed “is the federal government closed,” look at the federal holiday list. If you needed “are Hoyas on the lawn,” look at that year’s university notice.
University Georgetown Day: campus events, date set annually (24 April in 2026). Still a class day on the 2026 notice, unless a professor arranged otherwise. Georgetown Day School: a D.C. school’s name, founded 1945, not a public holiday.
No bank close, no mail stop, no Monday shift. Other Georgetowns — Guyana’s capital, towns in other states — do not inherit this campus Friday. Guyana’s public holidays are a different country’s list. A search that meant Georgetown, Guyana Independence Day (26 May) should leave this page. A search that meant the D.C. university should stay.
If the building that closes is a classroom for one afternoon, you have a campus day. If the building that closes is a courthouse, you have a holiday. Georgetown Day is the first.
How to plan around it
If you are visiting the university on the announced date, read that year’s student-affairs note for hours, lawn events, and hall access. Do not assume a skip day. The 2026 message said the opposite. If you are hiring, shipping, or booking a District office, ignore Georgetown Day and use the public calendar.
Spring in Washington is the season: April sits in northern meteorological spring. Outdoor lawn events are weather work. A rain plan belongs to the organizers, not to a holiday statute. If no date has been posted yet for the next year, wait for the university. Inventing 24 April 2027 would be a guess dressed as a fact.
