How it works

Valentine’s Day is 14 February every year. Galentine’s Day takes the 13th, the day before, as a date for friends — in the original joke, women friends at breakfast. The name was popularized by the television show Parks and Recreation, where the character Leslie Knope hosts a morning gathering the day before Valentine’s Day. It is not a statutory holiday. Banks stay on their ordinary 13 February hours. Schools stay on their ordinary 13 February timetable unless that date is already a weekend or some other closing.

13 February 2026 was a Friday; that date is already behind a 3 September 2026 reader. 13 February 2027 is a Saturday. 14 February 2027 is a Sunday. From 3 September 2026 to 13 February 2027 the remaining span is 163 days, by the same remaining-day count used for other dated pages: leftover September, then October through January, then 13 days of February. The 13th does not move to a Monday to create a long weekend. If you wanted a brunch on a workday, 2026’s Friday was the easier office date; 2027’s Saturday is already a weekend.

The day is a custom, not a licence. Nobody is owed a gathering. Nobody is required to spend money. People who do not keep Valentine’s Day can still keep the 13th, or skip both. People who keep both can keep them as two different mornings: friends on the 13th, a couple’s date on the 14th, or the reverse, or neither. The calendar only supplies the numbers.

Galentine’s Day ideas

Galentine’s Day ideas are ordinary friendship plans with a dated excuse. They work when they fit the people in the room. They fail when they copy a couple’s-day script and only swap the guest list. Breakfast or brunch at a table that will actually hold the group, booked under a name someone can spell.

A walk, a museum hour, or a film, if sitting and eating is not the point. Handwritten notes, not a stack of jokes that need explaining. A small useful gift if you already give gifts; nothing if you do not.

A shared cook at someone’s kitchen, which survives a sold-out restaurant on a Saturday 13 February. Ideas that need a rare reservation on a Saturday in February should be booked as soon as the group is real. Ideas that need only a kettle can wait until the week. Do not build a scavenger hunt that humiliates anyone. Do not require matching outfits unless everyone already wanted that. Do not treat the 13th as a test of who is a “real” friend. The date is thin on purpose. It is a morning, not a tribunal.

If some of the group also keep 14 February with partners, say so when you pick hours. A brunch that runs until late afternoon can collide with an evening plan. A breakfast that ends by late morning usually does not. The 13th is allowed to be short. It does not have to fill the whole day to count.

The 13th is for the friends you already have. It does not need a reservation at someone else’s romance, and it does not need a speech about who was left off a couple’s calendar.

What the date is not

It is not a federal holiday. It is not a substitute for Valentine’s Day unless a household decides it is. It is not Mother’s Day, not a workplace visiting day, and not Christmas. Christmas Day is 25 December; from 3 September 2026 that winter date is 113 days away and falls on a Friday. Galentine’s sits in February, in meteorological winter in the north, but it is not a midwinter feast with trees. Mixing the two in one shopping trip is how a friendship brunch acquires tinsel it did not ask for.

If 13 February is already a family birthday or a religious date in your house, you do not have to add a second theme. The nickname can wait a year. If the show that popularized the name is not your show, you can still use the 13th without quoting it. The date is the day before 14 February. That is enough to find it on a grid.
