How it works

Friends ran ten seasons on NBC, created by David Crane and Marta Kauffman. The six leads stay in the same New York orbit: Rachel, Monica, Phoebe, Joey, Chandler, and Ross. Most seasons place a Christmas-set episode in December. You watch them the way you watch any other episode: the service that holds the series in your country, in order or as a pile on the 24th. They do not change the date of Christmas. They borrow the tree, the party, the presents, and the pressure to be in one apartment together.

Lists disagree on the count because some people include New Year’s episodes and the first-season party that is set at New Year’s Eve. The conservative Christmas list is the December episodes from season 2 through season 9. Season 10 does not have a counterpart in that list. Season 1’s “The One with the Monkey,” which aired 15 December 1994, is a New Year’s Eve pact, not a Christmas dinner, even though it sits in a December slot and in some holiday round-ups.

Runtime is the usual half-hour comedy slot, about 22 minutes without the breaks you remember. Rating on those episodes is the series rating, TV-PG in U.S. listings. They are not children’s programming just because there is a tree in the frame.

The December episodes people actually mean

These are the titles that turn up, with U.S. air dates, when someone asks for Friends Christmas episodes: Season 2, episode 9, “The One with Phoebe’s Dad,” 14 December 1995. Phoebe goes looking for her father. Monica’s party overheats.

Season 3, episode 10, “The One Where Rachel Quits,” 12 December 1996. Rachel leaves her job at Central Perk. Season 4, episode 10, “The One with the Girl from Poughkeepsie,” 18 December 1997. Ross’s long-distance date. Phoebe writes a Christmas song for the group.

Season 5, episode 10, “The One with the Inappropriate Sister,” 17 December 1998. Phoebe collects for charity; Rachel meets a neighbour’s sister. Season 6, episode 10, “The One with the Routine,” 16 December 1999. Monica and Ross revive a dance; the episode leans toward New Year’s as well as Christmas presents.

Season 7, episode 10, “The One with the Holiday Armadillo,” 14 December 2000. Ross, in an armadillo costume, tries to teach his son Ben about Hanukkah next to Joey’s Santa. Season 8, episode 11, “The One with Ross’s Step Forward,” 13 December 2001. Joint Christmas cards become a relationship test.

Season 9, episode 10, “The One with Christmas in Tulsa,” 12 December 2002. Chandler is sent to Tulsa for work and comes home after quitting. The episode uses clips from earlier Christmas shows. “The One with the Holiday Armadillo” is the episode most people can describe without the title. It is also the one that is honestly about Hanukkah as much as Christmas: Ross wants Ben to have the Jewish holiday in a city, and a friend group, that defaults to Santa. If you only queue the armadillo and skip the rest, you have the most quoted costume and not the whole set.

How to watch them without mixing the calendar

Play them in production order if you care about who is dating whom. Play only the armadillo, Tulsa, and Phoebe’s dad if you want the three that read as Christmas even with the sound off. Skip “The One with the Monkey” if you asked for Christmas and not New Year’s. Include it if your household treats any December Friends as fair game. The title card will not referee.

Streaming rights move. A service that had the series last December may not have it this December. The episode titles do not move. Search the title, not “Friends holiday special,” which can surface later reunion chatter and other shows. There was no separate Friends Christmas movie. The reunion special is not a season 11 Christmas episode.

The Holiday Armadillo is a costume. Christmas in Tulsa is a work trip. Neither is a parish. Queue them because you like the six people, not because the 25th requires a sitcom. If you are watching with children, preview. These are adult comedies that happen to have tinsel. If you are watching alone on the 24th, two or three episodes is an evening, not a marathon obligation. The feast the next morning will still be the 25th, whether or not Chandler got out of Oklahoma.
