How it works

The giveaway is a date pun. Month 7, day 11 matches the chain’s name, written 7-Eleven, 7-11, or 7/11. Free slurpee day, 7-11 free slurpee day, and 7-eleven free slurpee day are the same summer errand. A store that joins pours a small cup under that year’s rules: hours, app extras, flavours, and “while supplies last.” A store that does not join is still a 7-Eleven. It is not in breach of a statute. There is no statute.

11 July 2026 was Saturday and has already gone. Banks stayed open. Mail ran. The next square is Sunday, 11 July 2027, three hundred and eleven days from this Thursday. The date does not move to Friday because Sunday is awkward for a queue. If that Sunday’s shop is on reduced hours, the free cup follows those hours or does not happen. Last summer’s line is not a rain cheque.

Free means the posted cup, not the whole machine

Read the notice for the summer you will actually stand in. Recent annual postings have described a free small Slurpee at participating 7-Eleven, Speedway, and Stripes locations, often with no purchase required, until the machine or the promotion runs out. “Free” is that posted size. A large cup, a second cup, or a different frozen brand is a purchase unless the notice says otherwise. ICEE and other slush machines at other retailers are other companies. They do not owe you 11 July.

Date: 11 July (7/11), every year as a marketing square. Next date from 3 September 2026: Sunday, 11 July 2027. What “free” usually names: a small Slurpee at shops that opt in. What it does not name: a civic close, a rain cheque, or every flavour in the barrel.

Bring a cup only if that year’s rules allow your own cup; many years they have not. A store can run out at noon. Another store on the next block can still be pouring. Ask the counter in front of you. A photograph from a different city is not inventory. Free is a posted size. The date is not a coupon for the whole freezer.

7-11, 7-Eleven, and 7/11 are one pun

The hyphen, the slash, and the spelled Eleven do not create three holidays. They create three ways to type the same chain and the same July square. 7/11 in a U.S. month-day reading is July 11. In a day-month reading used in much of the world, 7/11 is 7 November. If you are standing in a country that writes day first, check that you mean July, not November. The American promotion is the July reading. A November 7 visit is a different date and, unless a local shop invented its own pun, an ordinary paid cup.

If you wanted a public holiday, 11 July is the wrong instrument. If you wanted a small frozen drink for no money, wait until that July and the participating door. If you wanted one in September, pay for it. The pun does not run all year.
