Field day
Field Day is a booked outdoor date, usually for a school, a club, or a radio weekend. It is not a national public holiday and it is not Christmas.
How it works
A school field day is a festival the school already placed on its timetable: races, games, water bottles, sometimes a picnic. It often sits late in the school year, when the field is usable. The weekday is whatever that school booked. Rain can move it to a backup date the school named, or to a new notice. Parents who show up on the old date find an ordinary timetable. That is a local holiday-like morning, not a civic shutdown. Banks do not close because Year 4 is running a sack race.
Workplaces steal the same phrase for an off-site team day. The employer books it. The “field” may be a park, a hired ground, or a parking-lot barbecue. Again the date is local. It does not inherit a school Friday, and it does not inherit a radio weekend. Put the host on the planner or you will pack the wrong bag.
Amateur radio operators keep Field Day as a yearly on-air exercise. In the United States and Canada the American Radio Relay League holds it on the fourth full weekend of June. In 2026 that weekend is Saturday 27 June and Sunday 28 June. In 2027 it is 26–27 June. Operators set up outdoors or in unusual places and make contacts over that published window. It is a contest and a practice, not a paid federal day off. June is summer in those countries. Christmas is 25 December. The two fields are not adjacent on the year.
School or club field day: read this year’s notice; rain may move it. Workplace field day: the employer’s booking, no one else’s. ARRL Field Day: fourth full weekend of June (27–28 June in 2026). Christmas Day: 25 December, a winter civil date, Friday in 2026.
From 3 September 2026, the next ARRL Field Day is already behind you in that year; the next one is June 2027. Christmas Day 2026 is still ahead, 113 days from that Thursday. A search that lands on “field day” in September is often a parent looking for a school date that already happened, or a radio operator filing notes from June, or someone mixing the phrase with a company outing. Ask whose field before you ask which week.
A summer outdoor date, not a winter feast
Field Day earns a holiday-page because people treat it as a marked morning: packed lunches, a camera, a day that does not look like a normal Tuesday. The mark is still local. Christmas is the opposite kind of mark: a numbered winter feast, a U.S. federal holiday, lights in the dark. Do not transfer a rain backup from the playground onto 25 December. Do not transfer a federal close from 25 December onto a June Saturday. The radio weekend runs in weather. The school Friday often does not.
Write the owner. “Field Day — Year 4, that Friday” is a date. “Field Day — ARRL, 27–28 June 2026” is a date. “Field Day — Christmas picnic” is a confusion unless a workplace actually booked a December outing and used the wrong name. A December outing is still not Christmas Day unless it is on the 25th. In 2026 that 25th is a Friday, which would be an odd day for a radio Field Day and a common day for a school to already be on winter leave. The season tells you which field you are not on.
Field Day is a date someone booked for a piece of ground. The ground does not come with a national closing statute, and it does not come with a tree.
What to pack is not the calendar
Sun hats, water, and trainers belong to a school sports date. Radios, masts, and logging sheets belong to the June weekend. Wrapping paper belongs to December. A holiday page can say that much without listing a kit it cannot see. If a notice asked you to bring a dish, that dish is for that booking. It is not a Christmas menu unless the booking said so.
If you needed a public holiday in June, look at the actual June list for your country. Field Day is not on the U.S. federal list. Christmas Day is on that list, in December. Mixing the two searches is how a parent drives to a locked school in June with a radio, or to a contest site in December with a folding chair.
