People type what national day is it today when they want a civil or novelty observance: a food day, a workplace day, a flag day. A feast day is a different kind of list. It comes from a liturgical calendar. On Thursday, 3 September 2026, the General Roman Calendar marks Saint Gregory the Great, pope and doctor of the Church, as a memorial. That is a Catholic answer for this date. It is not a U.S. federal holiday, and it is not a random hashtag about tacos.

In church speech, “feast” is also a rank. The General Roman Calendar orders days as solemnities, feasts, and memorials (some memorials optional). Popular speech calls almost any saint’s day a feast day. Both uses are real. If a parish bulletin says “optional memorial,” that is the rank. If a family says “today is her feast,” they may mean the date of a namesake saint, not the technical grade.

Local calendars add patrons. A diocese can keep a saint who is not on the worldwide general list that day, or raise a rank. The Eastern Orthodox calendar can place saints on different dates, and some churches still use a Julian civil reckoning for feasts. “Catholic feast day today” is therefore not a promise that every Christian table is reading the same line.

Fixed dates, moveable dates

Many saints sit on a fixed civil date: Lucy on 13 December, Stephen on 26 December in the west, Gregory on 3 September. Moveable solemnities follow Easter: Easter itself, Ascension, Pentecost. Those do not have one number on the wall. “Feast day today” in April or May may be a moveable square, not a birthday of a martyr.

A feast day does not, by itself, close a bank. Christmas Day and some other civil holidays overlap Christian feasts and do close offices in many countries. Ordinary memorials do not. You can go to Mass and still go to work. You can skip both. The missal is not a timesheet.

Decide which calendar you mean: General Roman, a local Catholic diocese, another church, or a novelty “national day” list. Read today’s date on that calendar, including rank if you need it for a liturgy.

If you wanted a civil holiday, switch lists. The saint’s name will not empty the post office. The saint on the page does not clock you out. Light, liturgy, or an ordinary Thursday can share the same date without a public holiday to referee them.

How this date is not a national-day feed

Unofficial national-day calendars stack many names on one square. A liturgical calendar is stingy: one primary celebration, perhaps a commemoration, not a dozen snacks. If you came here from a “what national day” box, you can still look up food days elsewhere. This page will not invent a national pretzel feast to keep you busy. It will tell you that 3 September 2026 is Gregory on the general Catholic list, and that tomorrow the list will move.

Tomorrow’s feast is not today’s. Set a daily reminder if you keep a namesake. Do not freeze 3 September as a permanent answer. Gregory’s date will return next year on 3 September again; Easter will not. That is the whole mechanism.
