How it works

The play premiered in 2018 at Aurora Theatre Company in Berkeley, California. It is set at a fictional Eureka Day School in Berkeley, in the present. A parent-and-administrator board that prizes consensus faces a mumps outbreak and a fight over vaccination rules. The comedy is the meeting. The meeting is a weekday form: agendas, chat windows, and people who still have to go to work in the morning.

Weekday boards, weekend houses

School boards meet on weeknights. The play uses that clock. What you watch on a Saturday is a story about people who would have been in a cafeteria on a Tuesday. Regional productions keep ordinary theatre hours: evenings through the week, matinees on weekends. A 2024–25 Broadway run at the Samuel J. Friedman Theatre put the play on a full performance grid, including weeknights. It won the 2025 Tony Award for Best Revival of a Play.

If you are buying a ticket, the weekday night is often the quieter house. The play’s subject is already a room of adults talking past each other. A Tuesday audience does not change the text. It does change whether you are watching after a workday, which is how the characters arrived too.

Not: a California state holiday, and not a city festival in Eureka, Humboldt County, unless a theatre there is staging the play. Eureka Day is a weekday argument that theatres also perform on Saturdays, because that is when the audience can sit still for a meeting they would have left.

Not a state holiday

California’s holiday list does not include Eureka Day. Humboldt County’s 2026 closed dates run through the usual civil holidays; Eureka the city is the county seat, not a day off. If a search sent you here from “Eureka Day” plus a calendar, you likely wanted either the play’s local performance dates or a mix-up with the city name.

Productions after Broadway have been regional: weeknight opens, weekend matinees, the ordinary theatre week. Murphys Creek Theatre listed a 2026 run from 10 April through 3 May, with evening and afternoon slots — weekdays and weekends both. Always read that company’s calendar. The title does not carry a single annual date.

The school in the play is private and fictional. Real schools named Eureka are unrelated unless they borrowed the name. Do not treat the script as a public-health statute or as a district calendar. It is a comedy about how a weekday meeting fails.
