Est and pdt
Eastern Standard Time is two hours ahead of Pacific Daylight Time. Noon EST is 10 a.m. PDT, because EST is UTC−5 and PDT is UTC−7.
How it works
EST and PDT are not a matched pair of “winter east, winter west.” EST is the Eastern zone in standard time. PDT is the Pacific zone in daylight time. Their offsets are UTC−5 and UTC−7. Subtract two hours from an EST clock to get PDT. Add two hours from a PDT clock to get EST. That arithmetic is exact for those two labels. It is the wrong arithmetic for a normal U.S. winter (EST vs PST, three hours) and for a normal U.S. summer (EDT vs PDT, three hours).
On the U.S. mainland the two coasts change clocks together. In winter both use standard time. In summer both use daylight time. EST and PDT therefore rarely appear at the same moment in New York and Los Angeles. If a calendar says EST in July, the author almost always means Eastern Time and has used the winter letters by habit. If a calendar says PDT in January, the same habit ran the other way. Read the city, not the souvenir abbreviation.
The two-hour math is real when the labels are real. Jamaica, the Cayman Islands, and Panama stay on Eastern Standard Time year-round (UTC−5). In U.S. Pacific daylight months, those places are on EST while California is on PDT. Then noon in Kingston is 10 a.m. in Los Angeles. That is EST and PDT in the same instant, with a two-hour gap, not the three-hour coastal gap people memorize.
Why the letters get mixed
Invites are typed by people who learned “EST” as a synonym for the East Coast. They keep typing EST in July, when New York is on EDT (UTC−4). Pair that sloppy EST with a correct PDT (UTC−7) and you get a three-hour coastal gap hiding inside a two-hour formula, or the reverse if you “correct” the wrong way. The safe conversion is: pick two cities, or pick two offsets, then subtract.
EST = UTC−5 (Eastern, standard). EDT = UTC−4 (Eastern, daylight). PST = UTC−8 (Pacific, standard). PDT = UTC−7 (Pacific, daylight). EST with PDT = two hours; EDT with PDT = three hours; EST with PST = three hours.
The letters on an invite are not a season. EST is winter in the east; PDT is summer in the west; both at once means someone is either abroad or being careless.
How to convert without guessing the season
If you know the offsets, ignore the story and subtract. 3 p.m. EST is 1 p.m. PDT. 8 a.m. PDT is 10 a.m. EST. If you do not know whether the Eastern side is really on standard time, replace EST with a city: New York in January is EST; New York in July is EDT. Los Angeles in July is PDT; Los Angeles in January is PST. Convert city to city and the letters will follow.
Software should use America/New_York and America/Los_Angeles, or America/Jamaica when the Eastern side does not use daylight time. Those identifiers carry the offset for the date. A string “EST” in a database does not. If you must store an abbreviation, store the offset too, or store UTC and display locally.
Arizona, except the Navajo Nation, stays on Mountain Standard Time (UTC−7) year-round, which is the same offset as PDT, with a different name. That is not EST, and it is not Pacific. Do not borrow Arizona as a shortcut for EST and PDT. Convert Arizona through UTC−7 against whatever the other clock actually is that day.
Questions and answers
- What is the time difference between EST and PDT?
- Two hours. EST (UTC−5) is ahead of PDT (UTC−7). Noon EST is 10 a.m. PDT.
- Do New York and Los Angeles use EST and PDT at the same time?
- Usually no. In winter both are on standard time; in summer both are on daylight time. EST with PDT is common when one side stays on EST year-round, or when an invite used the wrong letters.
- How should I write the time to avoid this mix-up?
- Use a city, or use Eastern Time / Pacific Time, or use an IANA name. Do not pair EST with PDT unless you mean those two offsets on purpose.
