Ernest Saves Christmas is a 1988 comedy: Jim Varney’s Ernest helps Santa pick a successor in Orlando, Florida. Put it on as a tape. Leave the feast on the 25th.
How it works
The film is a Christmas picture built around a character who already existed in commercials and in Ernest Goes to Camp (1987). Ernest P. Worrell is working as a taxi driver when he picks up a man who says he is Santa Claus. Santa has come to Orlando to pass the job to Joe Carruthers, a local children’s presenter, because the magic of the role runs down and has to be handed on. Things go wrong in the way a broad comedy needs them to. Ernest, who believes the passenger, becomes the person trying to get Santa to the right place in time.
John Cherry directed. The U.S. theatrical release was 11 November 1988. Douglas Seale plays Santa. Oliver Clark plays Joe Carruthers. Noelle Parker plays Harmony, a runaway teenager who ends up in the cab. The story is set in the last days before Christmas, with Orlando as the map — airport, streets, a children’s museum — not a snow village. You do not need the earlier Ernest film to follow this one. You do need a taste for slapstick and a man who talks to the camera.
As a holiday page, this is a watching plan. It does not create a public day. The 25th stays put whether Ernest makes the appointment or not. It is one of the tapes households put on because the plot already contains Santa, a deadline, and a sack. If your household does not like loud physical comedy, this is the wrong tape. If it does, this is the title to search, not a random “Ernest” sequel about jail, camp, or a school play.
Orlando, a taxi, and a successor
The engine is succession. Santa is old. The job has to pass to someone who will take children seriously. Joe is that someone on paper, then the plot puts obstacles in the way: agents, disbelief, a sack that must not be lost, a clock that must be met. Ernest is not the new Santa. He is the chaotic helper. Harmony is the second helper, not a side joke only. Names and ranks matter if you are describing the film; they do not matter if you are only putting it on and letting it run.

Later Ernest pictures exist under other titles. If a catalogue shows you Ernest Goes to Jail or Ernest Scared Stupid, read the label. Those are not this Christmas film. The word “saves” and the word “Christmas” are the markers. A compilation disc may still bury this feature next to the others; check the menu.
Putting it on in December
It is a full-length theatrical comedy, not a short. Give it an evening that can stand noise: children talking back to the screen, a cab that does not obey traffic manners, a Santa who has to persuade adults that he is not a confused patient. It is gentler than a film with a villain hunting children, and broader than a quiet nativity. That is the band it sits in.
Rights move between services. A title that streamed last December may be a disc this December. Search Varney’s name plus this title. Do not grab a school recording or a colourised clip with a similar joke. The 1988 feature is the one with Seale as Santa and Orlando on the map.
Ernest cannot save a date that already arrives every 25 December. He can only save a plot that put Santa in a taxi on purpose. Watch it on the Eve, on the Day, or on a weekend in the weeks before. Thursday 24 December 2026 and Friday 25 December 2026 are the civil Eve and Day; the film does not care which you pick. When it ends, the calendar is still the calendar. If you want a quieter Christmas story, pick a different title. If you want this one, let Varney talk, let Santa make the appointment, and then go to bed.
