How it works

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar. The month is 29 or 30 days. Each fast runs from dawn to sunset. The last fast still ends at sunset on the last day of Ramadan. The feast is not that sunset. The feast is the next morning: 1 Shawwal, Eid al-Fitr, the Festival of Breaking the Fast. Night after the last maghrib is already past the empty-stomach rule. Dawn of Eid is a prayer and a meal in daylight, not another fast.

The civil date moves. A lunar year is shorter than a Gregorian year, so Ramadan and Eid walk earlier by about eleven days each solar year. In 2026 Eid al-Fitr clustered around Friday 20 March on common civil conversions. From 3 September 2026 that feast is past. The next end of Ramadan is in 2027, expected in early March, with the exact morning set by moon sighting or by the civil calendar a country uses. Neighbouring mosques can differ by a day. A projection on a website is a forecast. The announcement your community follows is the holiday.

In many Muslim-majority countries the state closes offices for one or more days of Eid. In the United States neither Eid is on the federal holiday list. Schools, banks, and post offices follow ordinary weekday rules unless a city, campus, or workplace added its own close. The religious day still happens. The paid day off is local.

The morning after the last sunset

Eid morning is the holiday’s centre. People bathe, put on clean or new clothes, and go to the Eid prayer, often in a mosque, a hall, or an open lot because the crowd is larger than a Friday congregation. Charity given as zakat al-fitr is due before that prayer where that duty applies, so that people who need food can take part in the feast. After the prayer there is food in daylight, visits, and greetings. Eid Mubarak is the common blessing. It fits this feast and also Eid al-Adha, which is a different holiday later in the lunar year.

The last night of Ramadan can include extra prayer, but it is not Eid. Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Power, is sought in the last ten nights of Ramadan; it is a night of the month, not the feast that ends the month. Do not move Eid to that night because the night felt like a peak. The calendar peak of the close is 1 Shawwal in daylight.

Greeting: Eid Mubarak, on the day the community is actually celebrating. U.S. federal holiday: no. The fast ends at sunset. The holiday begins the next morning. Do not skip the night and then wonder why the feast felt like another empty day.

What the civil calendar does with the feast

Because the moon can delay or advance the public announcement by a day, travel and school notes should stay loose until the sighting or the state calendar is out. Booking a Friday off because a website printed Friday is how people miss a Thursday feast or sit idle on the wrong morning. Ask which calendar the mosque, the embassy, or the ministry is using, then lock the leave to that answer.

Eid al-Adha is not the end of Ramadan. It falls on 10 Dhu al-Hijjah, in the Hajj season, weeks later on the lunar map. English search boxes mash the two Eids because both use the same greeting. They are not interchangeable weekends. If you needed the close of the fast, you wanted Shawwal, not the sacrifice feast.

On a U.S. weekday Eid, the person celebrating may take personal leave while the rest of the office treats the date as ordinary. That split is the American version of the holiday: the feast is real; the building’s clock may not bow. Wish people well on the morning they are keeping. The greeting is not a court date, and it is not improved by arguing about the civil square.
