How many week days in the year is still a seven-day question even when someone asked for eight. Count the Gregorian year in dates: 365 in a common year, 366 in a leap year. Fifty-two weeks are 364 dates. The remainder is one date, or two when February has 29. Those leftovers are extra copies of existing weekday names. They are not an eighth name invented to soak up the remainder.

If “week days” means Monday through Friday, fifty-two weeks already hold 260 of those. Leftovers that fall in the five-day set add one or two, so the office count is 260, 261, or 262. If leftovers fall on Saturday or Sunday, the office count stays at 260. Eight-day talk does not add a column to that table. You cannot make the remainder disappear by wishing for another weekday. You can only name which of the seven got the extra visit.

ISO week numbering can print a week 53. That is a numbering rule for seven-day weeks, used when the week-numbering year contains 53 Thursdays. It is not a claim that the Earth spun an extra weekday, and it is not an eight-day week. Week 53 still contains Monday through Sunday. The number on the week is a label. The length inside the label is still seven dates.

Civil week: seven named days, in a fixed order. Year length: 365 or 366 dates, never a tidy 52 times 7. Office weekdays: 260 to 262 Monday-through-Friday dates, depending on the year. Week 53: still seven days, when the ISO rule grants the extra week number. Eight as a figure of speech: extra effort, not an extra column.

Eight days a week as speech, not a grid

Eight days a week is an English hyperbole: more often than a week can hold. The Beatles recorded a song with that title; the phrase is older as a way to say “all the time, and then some.” Searches for eight days of week are the same idea with a word dropped. None of those searches add a civil day between Sunday and Monday. The wall calendar does not grow a new square because a chorus needed a rhyme.

Inclusive counting is the usual trap that feels like eight. From Monday to the next Monday you can point at eight named dates if you include both Mondays, and seven elapsed days between their midnights. That is why a “week later” meeting lands on the same weekday, and why a list that includes both ends looks one longer than the span. Count ends, or count elapsed nights, but do not mix the two and then announce a new weekday.

A workweek of five days is a subset, not a shorter week. A shift pattern of four on and four off is a roster, not an eight-day civil week. The named days underneath still cycle by sevens. If your roster says “day eight,” it is counting shifts, not asking the calendar to invent a neighbour for Sunday.

When a culture really used eight

Ancient Rome used an eight-day market cycle, the nundinae, with days marked in a repeating A-to-H sequence. That was a real cycle for markets and court days. It sat beside other ways of grouping time; it is not the week printed on a German or English planner now. Citing it does not turn next Tuesday into “day H.” If you needed the Roman cycle, you needed a history text. If you needed a meeting, you needed one of the seven names.

Promise extra effort if you want. The calendar will still invoice you in sevens, and it does not take IOUs. Keep the joke and the grid on separate lines. The joke is allowed. The grid is seven. Filling a timesheet with eight weekday names is how payroll and a school diary stop matching. If a form offers only seven checkboxes, it is not missing a box. It is the week.
