How it works

Easter Sunday is a movable feast: always a Sunday, not always the same date of the month. Western churches take the Sunday after the first full moon on or after 21 March. The weekend people mean is the cluster that hangs off that Sunday: Good Friday before it, Holy Saturday beside it, and Easter Monday after it in places that keep that Monday as a holiday.

In 2026 the Western dates are Friday 3 April, Saturday 4 April, Sunday 5 April, and Monday 6 April. In 2027 the Western Sunday is 28 March, so the Friday and Monday hitch to that earlier week. Copying 2026’s squares onto 2027 is the usual error. The Sunday stays Sunday. The numbers on the squares do not.

Orthodox churches that follow the Julian paschalion can land on a different Sunday. In 2026 that Sunday is 12 April, a week later than the Western date. In some years the two Easters coincide. If a household keeps both, “Easter weekend” is not automatically one shared four-day block. Name which calendar you mean before you book travel.

Find the Easter Sunday you mean, Western or Orthodox. Mark the Friday before it and the Monday after it. Check which of those weekdays are public holidays where you are. Write the dates on the invite. The word “Easter” will not survive a mixed calendar.

Four weekdays, not one floating rest

Good Friday is a Friday. In England, Wales, and many other places it is a public holiday. In the United States it is not a federal holiday, though some states, schools, and firms treat it as one. Holy Saturday is a Saturday, already a weekend day in ordinary civil use. Easter Sunday is Sunday. Easter Monday is a Monday, and a bank holiday in the United Kingdom; it is not a US federal holiday.

That is why “Easter weekend” is a pile, not a synonym for Sunday. A visitor who hears “weekend” and arrives Saturday afternoon can miss Good Friday services and still catch Sunday. A visitor who assumes Monday is off in every country will find US offices open. Read the local holiday list, then the employer’s list. They are not always the same pile.

Good Friday: the Friday before Easter Sunday. Holy Saturday: the Saturday between them. Easter Sunday: the feast day, always a Sunday. Easter Monday: the Monday after, a holiday in some countries, an ordinary Monday in others. Easter weekend is a Sunday with neighbours, not a Sunday that learned to last four days.

Travel, shops, and the weekday underneath

Trains, shops, and government counters often run a Sunday timetable on Easter Sunday, and a holiday timetable on Good Friday or Easter Monday where those days are off. A listing that says “this weekend” without dates is incomplete in a year when Friday and Monday are also shut. Check the hours for each named day, not for the phrase.

In England and Wales, large shops with a retail floor over 280 square metres must close on Easter Sunday under the Sunday Trading Act 1994. Smaller shops are not under that same Easter Sunday closure. The United States has no federal rule that grocery stores must close that Sunday. The weekday is Sunday in both places. The lock on the door is local.

If you are counting Monday–Friday workdays in the year, Easter Monday removes a weekday only where it is actually a holiday. Easter Sunday never was a weekday. Do not subtract Sunday from a weekday tally; it was not in the tally. Subtract Friday or Monday only after you know those dates are closed for the roster you are counting.
