Dyngus day
Dyngus Day is Easter Monday in Polish tradition, a wet, playful day after Easter Sunday. In some U.S. cities it is also a public party. Federal offices stay on an ordinary Monday.
How it works
The older Polish custom is Śmigus-Dyngus, kept on Easter Monday. Water, perfume, and pussy-willow branches are the usual tools of the joke: people sprinkle or douse each other, and the day marks the turn out of Lent and Easter Sunday into the week that follows. Because Easter Sunday moves, Dyngus Day moves. It is always the Monday after Easter, not a fixed April date, and not a Saturday made long for convenience.
Western Easter in 2026 was 5 April, so Dyngus Day was Monday 6 April. Western Easter in 2027 is 28 March, so Dyngus Day is Monday 29 March. Orthodox churches that follow a different Pascha will keep Easter Monday on their own Monday. A city festival posted on the Western Monday is not automatically the Orthodox Monday. Read which Easter the poster used.
In the United States the day is widely associated with Polish-American neighbourhoods, especially in Buffalo, New York, and in other cities with Polish parishes and halls. Parades, polka, food, and club events sit on that Monday when local groups run them. Those events are civic parties on a moving Monday. They are not a national closing.
Easter Monday, water, and a civic parade
Easter Sunday is the feast. Easter Monday is the next civil morning. Dyngus Day occupies that morning. It is not a second Easter, and it is not Bright Week under another name. If you are going to a parade, you are going on the Monday after the Easter your hosts are using. If you are visiting a family that still sprinkles water at the door, you are in the house custom, which can be gentle or soaking according to that house. Consent is still consent. A tradition of dousing does not override a person who does not want water.
Because the day is a Monday, it collides with ordinary work in countries that do not treat Easter Monday as a public holiday. The United States federal calendar does not close for it. Some workers still take the day because their workplace is in a neighbourhood that throws the party, or because they have leftover holiday time after Easter. That is leave, not a statute.
Date rule: the Monday after Easter Sunday. 2026 (Western): Monday 6 April. 2027 (Western): Monday 29 March. United States: not a federal closing. Water and willow are custom, not a municipal requirement.
The water is the joke. The Monday is the calendar. Showing up dry on Tuesday does not mean you missed Easter.
Not a federal Monday, still a marked Monday
Plan a Dyngus Day outing as you would plan any dated city event on a Monday: check that year’s host for start times, street closures, and whether the party is the daytime parade, an evening hall, or both. Do not copy last year’s weekday onto next year’s Easter. When Easter is late, the Monday is a different April week, and the weather is a different coat. When Easter is early, the Monday can still sit in March.
Shops and offices in most of the United States keep ordinary Monday hours unless they choose otherwise. In countries where Easter Monday is already a public holiday, Dyngus customs can sit on a day that is already off work. Those are two layers: the civic closing, and the Polish Monday. The United States usually has only the second layer, plus whatever a local festival adds.
If you only need one line: Dyngus Day is Easter Monday. Find Easter, add one day, and then read the local poster if you wanted a parade rather than a bucket.
