Dot day

How it works

15 September is the anniversary of Peter H. Reynolds’s picture book The Dot, published in 2003 by Candlewick Press. In 2009 the teacher Terry Shay used that date with his students, and the day became International Dot Day: a mark-making feast for classrooms, not a lock on a federal building. The story is about Vashti, who is dared to make a mark, begins with a dot, and finds she can draw after all. The holiday, such as it is, is that dare on a calendar square.

It is unofficial. There is no statute, no observed-Monday rule, and no postal close. A school that marks it is choosing a lesson. A school that does not is still having 15 September. Teachers often say “on or around” the 15th so a weekend or a trip day does not kill the activity. That flexibility is a classroom courtesy. It does not move the named date. Calling a random Friday in October Dot Day because the art room was free is a different event wearing the same nickname.

In 2026 the 15th is a Tuesday. From 3 September that Tuesday is twelve days ahead. The day sits in the middle of the month, in the northern school year’s opening stretch in many U.S. districts and in the already-running term in others. It is not the September equinox. The equinox is an astronomical instant later in the month. Dot Day will not start autumn for you, and autumn will not wait for a painted dot.

A school feast that does not close the town

Holiday pages usually ask what shuts. This one does not shut. Offices run. Mail runs. Liquor stores follow their own holiday lists, which do not include this Tuesday. The “feast” is paper, paint, and a read-aloud. That is enough for a classroom and nothing for a bank. If you arrived hoping for a day off, you have the wrong 15 September. If you arrived hoping for a reason to put a mark on paper, you have the right one.

International in the name means classes in many countries use the same numbered date. It does not mean ministries of education listed it. A child in a school that never heard of Reynolds still has a 15 September. The date is global as a label. The activity is local as a choice. Sharing a photograph of a dotted shirt does not convert the Tuesday into a civic holiday in another time zone.

Named date: 15 September every year. 2026 weekday: Tuesday. Origin: publication anniversary of The Dot, then a 2009 classroom declaration. Public holiday: no. Monday shift: none, because there is no law to observe.

A painted dot is a feast a classroom can actually finish before lunch. A public holiday would have sent everyone home first.

September already has other marks

September is crowded with real civic days in some countries and with unofficial ones in others. Labor Day in the United States is the first Monday of the month; in 2026 that Monday is 7 September, eight days before Dot Day. That Monday can close federal offices. The following Tuesday the 15th does not inherit the close. Mexican Independence Day is 16 September, the morning after Dot Day, a national date in Mexico and a parade date in some U.S. cities. Do not mash the 15th and the 16th into one “mid-September off.” One is a picture-book anniversary. The next is a country’s independence square.

Rosh Hashanah can fall in September when the Jewish year puts it there. That is a religious new year with its own close rules for those who keep it. It is not Dot Day. Patriot Day in the United States is 11 September, a remembrance date, not a federal day off. The month can hold several named squares without any of them being this classroom Tuesday. Put Dot Day on the class calendar as an art date. Put the civic closes on the dates that actually close things.

If 15 September is a weekend in another year, the named holiday is still the 15th. The lesson may move to Friday or Monday. Say so. The book does not mind. The wall calendar will still print 15 on the Saturday.
