Today is National Donut Day, or National Doughnut Day, only if today is the first Friday of June. Any other weekday in June is not that day. A Tuesday in November is not that day either, even if a second doughnut date appears on some lists. “What national day is it today” is a Friday check in early June, not a craving check.

The Salvation Army held the first National Donut Day in Chicago in 1938 to honour volunteers who served doughnuts to soldiers in the First World War and to raise money in the Depression. That June Friday is the date bakeries and chains still mean. Donut day and doughnut day are spelling variants of the same Friday. Neither spelling moves it to Monday.

Dunkin Donuts National Donut Day in ordinary coverage is Dunkin participating on that same first Friday. In 2026 Dunkin posted a free doughnut with a beverage purchase on Friday 5 June at participating shops. That was a 2026 offer. It is not a law and it is not a promise for 2027. Read the current year’s notice. A screenshot from another June is not a coupon.

A floating Friday, not a fixed June 5

You cannot memorise 5 June. You memorise the first Friday. June 1 is that Friday only when June 1 is a Friday. In 2027 the first Friday is 4 June. National Donut Day when, asked as a date, is that count, year after year. It is not a US federal holiday. Banks, mail, and schools that are still in session follow an ordinary Friday.

Some American calendars also list 5 November as a second doughnut day. That November date is a separate commercial listing, not the Salvation Army Friday, and not a federal closing. If a shop runs a November deal, that is November. Do not arrive in June with a November code, or in November expecting the June line.

Main US date: first Friday of June. 2026: 5 June. 2027: 4 June. Unofficial: offices stay open. Dunkin and other chains: offers are year-by-year, shop-by-shop, often while supplies last. November 5 on some lists: a different listed date, not the June Friday.

Find the first Friday in June of the year you care about. Read that shop’s own post for that Friday. Go early if the offer is a free doughnut; trays empty. Do not treat a closed bank as part of the pastry.

What a chain may do, and what it will not

A participating Dunkin, Krispy Kreme, or independent counter may give a doughnut free, or free with a drink, or not at all. Limits, app rules, and “while supplies last” are local that morning. National Donut Day when you needed a dozen for an office is still a Friday in a bakery, not a catering statute. Heat in early northern summer will melt glaze on a walk. That is weather, not a different holiday.

The Salvation Army may still mark the Friday in some cities. That is their event. You can buy a doughnut, skip the doughnut, or give money without eating sugar. Missing the Friday does not create a makeup Monday. The next National Donut Day is the next first Friday in June.

The doughnut is free only if that shop said so this Friday. Nostalgia is not a barcode. If you asked “what national day is it today” in September, the June Friday has already gone for that year. Count forward to the next first Friday of June. Do not wait for a presidential proclamation. Food days of this kind live on shop doors.
