When is national donut day is a first-Friday question. June always has 30 days. The first Friday can be as early as 1 June, when June begins on Friday, or as late as 7 June, when June begins on Saturday. You find it by looking at the June grid and taking the first Friday square, not by memorising 5 June as if it were permanent.

The Salvation Army held the first National Donut Day in Chicago in 1938, tying the date to volunteers who served doughnuts to soldiers in the First World War, later nicknamed Donut Lassies. The modern observance stays on that first Friday in June. It is unofficial as a public holiday: banks and schools follow ordinary Friday hours unless they have a separate reason not to.

Because 1 June 2026 is a Monday, the Fridays of June 2026 are 5, 12, 19, and 26 June. The first of those is National Donut Day. In another year the number changes. Do not copy 5 June onto 2027 without looking. In 2027, 1 June is a Tuesday, so the first Friday is 4 June.

Donut day in casual speech is this Friday in June, not a second date in November and not a shop’s own “doughnut Wednesday.” If a bakery prints its own day, that is the bakery’s calendar. The national observance remains the first Friday of June.

Moving observances follow a weekday rule. Thanksgiving in the United States is a fourth-Thursday rule. National Donut Day is a first-Friday-of-June rule. Fixed observances, such as a numbered date, do not care what the weekday is. This one does. If you write only “June 5” in a repeating reminder, you will be wrong in most years.

Set the reminder as “first Friday in June” if your calendar tool allows a weekday rule. If it does not, look once a year when May ends and write the new number. From 3 September 2026, the next National Donut Day is 4 June 2027, because 5 June 2026 has already passed.

The date is still the first Friday of June. The weather is local. A picnic script from a hot June in one country does not travel with the name of the day.

Shops, offers, and ordinary June hours

Bakeries and coffee chains sometimes run a promotion on National Donut Day. Those offers belong to the shop and to that Friday. They are not the definition of the date. Hours can match an ordinary Friday, or a shop can open earlier. Read the location you will visit. A deal that existed last year is not a law this year.

Chase the first Friday of June, not a favourite number in the month. The doughnut will not wait on the 5th if Friday has already moved. If you miss the Friday, the next National Donut Day is the first Friday of the following June, not a makeup Saturday. You can still buy a doughnut on Saturday. That purchase is not the observance; it is breakfast.
