Dominicans mothers day
Dominican Mother’s Day is the last Sunday of May in the Dominican Republic. It is not the U.S. second Sunday of May. Many Dominican-American families keep both dates.
How it works
Día de las Madres in the Dominican Republic falls on the last Sunday of May every year. Because it is a Sunday, ordinary weekday offices are already closed. The date is a family and commercial peak, not a midweek bank holiday you have to hunt. Flowers, meals, church, school acts, and visits to cemeteries are the usual public language of the day. The civil rule is the last Sunday, not a fixed 30 May, even though the first official celebration was 30 May 1926, which that year was a Sunday.
The United States, Canada, and many other countries use the second Sunday of May. That is a different appointment. Mexico and several Central American countries use 10 May as a fixed date. Haiti, France, and Sweden are among the countries that also use a last-Sunday-of-May rule, which is a coincidence of calendars, not a shared Dominican statute. If a group chat says “Mother’s Day” in May without a country, ask which Sunday. In a mixed Dominican-American house the honest answer is often twice.
Dominican Father’s Day is a separate mark. It was associated with the last Sunday of June and in later practice has been kept on the last Sunday of July so the two commercial Sundays are not stacked a month apart. Do not use Father’s Day to date Mother’s Day. They were placed to leave space between them.
Last Sunday, not the second
The Dominican date was set in 1926 during the presidency of Horacio Vásquez, after the end of the U.S. occupation. Trina de Moya de Vásquez, the first lady, and the educator Ercilia Pepín organised a Pro-Mother’s Day Committee in Santiago de los Caballeros. The first official celebration was 30 May 1926. The recurring rule became the last Sunday of May so families could gather on a rest day. Trina de Moya wrote the Himno a las Madres, still used in schools and official acts.
Symbols from that first committee remain in the telling: a red carnation (clavel rojo) for a living mother, and a white tuberose or Madonna lily (nardo or azucena) for a mother who has died. The pairing is a grief rule as much as a florist code. A bouquet that ignores it is not illegal. It is only tone-deaf in a tradition that named both kinds of honour on the same Sunday.
Dominican Republic: last Sunday of May, from the 1926 observance. United States: second Sunday of May. Mexico and some neighbours: 10 May, a fixed calendar date. First Dominican official day: 30 May 1926, in Santiago’s committee tradition.
Diaspora: many households keep the U.S. Sunday and the Dominican Sunday in the same month. Two Mother’s Days in one May is not a scheduling error. It is two countries sharing a family.
How the Sunday is kept, here and there
In the Republic the week before the last Sunday fills shops and kitchens. The day itself is visits, food, and the hymn in school and civic settings. The committee in 1926 also sent people to cemeteries. That visit is still part of the day for families whose mother is not at the table. If you are travelling to Santo Domingo or Santiago that weekend, expect a family Sunday, not an empty tourist town and not a midweek shutdown.
In the United States a Dominican family may already have done cards and brunch on the second Sunday. The last Sunday can still be the larger table, the Spanish hymn, the flowers that match the old code. Neither date cancels the other. A school in New York that only marks the second Sunday has not “moved” Dominican Mother’s Day. It has marked the U.S. one. The last Sunday remains available.
Lock the rule, not a memorised number. In 2026 the last Sunday of May was 31 May. In 2025 it was 25 May. Next year, count Sundays from the end of the month. If 31 May is a Sunday, that is the day. If 31 May is a Saturday, the day is 30 May. Do not celebrate on 10 May unless you are keeping a Mexican or similar fixed date on purpose.
