Diwali dates

Diwali follows the Hindu lunisolar calendar, not a fixed Gregorian number. The main night is Kartika Amavasya, which in 2026 falls on 8 November.

How it works

Diwali dates move on the civil calendar because the festival is tied to a lunar month, not to 4 July logic. The principal night for many North Indian households is the Amavasya, the new-moon tithi, of Kartika. That new moon walks through October or November of the Gregorian year. It does not repeat the same numbered day two years running except by coincidence.

In 2026 the main Diwali / Lakshmi Puja night is Sunday 8 November. The surrounding stretch is a cluster of days, not a single square: Dhanteras on 6 November, Naraka Chaturdashi on 7 November, the Amavasya night on 8 November, then Govardhan Puja and Bhai Dooj on the next days of that week. Local panchang timing can split a tithi across two civil dates, so a temple in one city may light lamps on the evening of the 8th while a notice in another city names the 9th for a related rite. The moon, not the office wall clock, is the source.

South Indian and some other regional calendars treat Naraka Chaturdashi as the heart of the celebration. In Bengal, Kali Puja falls on the same new-moon night. Sikh observance of Bandi Chhor Divas often coincides with Diwali. Those are not competing Gregorian dates so much as different names on the same lunisolar hinge.

Anchor: Kartika Amavasya (new moon of Kartika). 2026 main night: 8 November. Typical Gregorian window: October or November. Civil date can differ by a day with local tithi timing. Do not memorise “the first Sunday in November.” 8 November 2026 happens to be a Sunday; that is the weekday of that new moon, not the rule. Next time the Amavasya can sit on a Wednesday in October.

Why the date drifts

A lunar month is about 29 and a half days. Twelve of them are shorter than the solar year, so the lunisolar calendar inserts an extra month in some years to keep seasons in their seats. That insertion, and the wander of the new moon, is why Diwali 2025 and Diwali 2026 are not a year-and-a-day apart on the same numbered date. They jump.

Western Easter also uses a moon, which is why people sometimes expect Diwali to track Easter. It does not. Easter is locked to a spring full-moon rule in the Christian computus. Diwali is locked to Kartika’s new moon in the Hindu calendar. Two lunar rules, two seasons, two sets of dates.

If you need a reminder on a phone, set the year you care about after checking that year’s panchang, not a repeating annual alarm on 8 November. A repeating Gregorian alarm will be wrong in a year when Kartika Amavasya falls in October.

Writing the cluster on a civil calendar

For 2026, mark 8 November as the main Diwali date in the widespread Lakshmi Puja sense, and mark the adjacent dates if you are keeping the five-day house. If your family follows a regional main day, mark that tithi instead of arguing with a North Indian office poster. The civil calendar will accept either; it does not referee.

Travel and school holidays in India often cover a short block around the festival rather than one Tuesday. That block is a timetable choice. It can be longer than the ritual cluster. It is not the definition of Diwali dates. The new moon will not keep 8 November as a pet date to help you reuse last year’s banner.

Questions and answers

When is Diwali in 2026?
The main Kartika Amavasya night is 8 November 2026. The surrounding festival days sit immediately before and after, on the local panchang, not on a reused Gregorian number.
Is Diwali always in November?
No. It falls in October or November on the Gregorian calendar, depending on the new moon of Kartika.
Why is it not the same numbered date every year?
Because it follows a lunar month, not a fixed civil day. The Gregorian number has to chase the tithi.
