Derby Day for the Kentucky Derby is the first Saturday in May. It is a Saturday, not a weekday. The race is run at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Kentucky.
How it works
The civil name is a Saturday in spring. “First Saturday in May” is a rule that walks with the calendar: the Saturday that falls on 1 May when 1 May is a Saturday, or the next Saturday after 1 May when 1 May is a Sunday through Friday. In 2026, 1 May is a Friday, so Derby Day is Saturday 2 May. The weekday is Saturday every time. The date of the month moves inside the first week of May.
That Saturday is still one of the 52 or 53 Saturdays in the year. It does not add an eighth weekday. It does not turn Friday into a public holiday by itself. Not a new day of the week
People search Derby Day next to weekday lists because the phrase looks like a named day. It is a named Saturday. Cheeseburger Day, teachers’ days, and other branded dates work the same way: they sit on an existing weekday. They do not extend the week to eight names. Italian lunedì through domenica, English Monday through Sunday, and Derby Day can share a calendar page. Only one of them is a horse race.
Find 1 May in the year you mean. If it is Saturday, that is Derby Day for the Kentucky rule. If it is not, walk forward to the next Saturday. Leave Monday through Friday on their own rows. The race does not sit there.
