Decoration day
Decoration Day is the older name for Memorial Day in the United States. It began as a spring day to place flowers on Civil War graves. The federal holiday is now the last Monday in May.
How it works
After the Civil War, towns North and South already decorated soldiers’ graves on local dates. On 5 May 1868, John A. Logan, commander-in-chief of the Grand Army of the Republic, issued General Orders No. 11. He set 30 May 1868 for strewing flowers on the graves of Union dead. People called that national call Decoration Day. A large early gathering was at Arlington National Cemetery on that 30 May.
The name Memorial Day spread later and became the official federal name in the 1960s. The Uniform Monday Holiday Act, signed in 1968 and effective in 1971, moved the federal holiday from 30 May to the last Monday in May so the day would sit on a three-day weekend. By 3 September 2026 the 2026 holiday is already gone: it was Monday, 25 May. The next federal date is Monday, 31 May 2027. The traditional 30 May square in 2027 is a Sunday. People who still say Decoration Day may mean the Monday holiday, the old 30 May date, or the act of decorating a grave on either.
The federal day honors those who died in U.S. military service, not veterans who are living. Living veterans are the work of Veterans Day on 11 November. Mixing the two dates is the most common calendar error on this subject. A mattress sale does not settle the difference.
May 30 and the Monday
Logan’s May 30 was chosen as a late-spring date with flowers in bloom, and as a date that was not the anniversary of one battle. Meteorological spring in the north is March, April, and May; late May is the door into summer. That season is why cut flowers were the original tool. The Monday weekend is a later convenience for workers, not the original logic of the bouquet.
Some families still visit cemeteries on 30 May even when the federal closing is another day. That visit is the old decoration custom. It does not reopen a bank that is closed on the Monday, and it does not require the Monday off if 30 May is a Sunday. Confederate Memorial Day is a separate southern set of dates and names; it is not Logan’s order and not the federal Monday.
If you need a closed federal office, use the last Monday in May. If you mean the nineteenth-century date, that square is 30 May. If you mean flowers on a grave, either day can hold the work; say which one you are keeping.
If you mean living veterans, that is 11 November, not this page. Congress can move a Monday picnic. It cannot move a grave. Take the flowers on the day you will actually walk the rows.
What closes, and what the old name still does
On the observed federal Monday, federal offices close. The U.S. Postal Service does not run regular delivery. The Federal Reserve marks the holiday, so most bank lobbies close. Many towns hold a parade or a cemetery program. Waterloo, New York, is recognized by Congress as a birthplace of the earlier local Memorial Day custom; other towns have their own origin claims. This page does not pick a single small-town inventor over Logan’s 1868 national order. Both kinds of story exist.
Calling the Monday “Decoration Day” is still understood in parts of the country, especially among older speakers. Calling 30 May “Memorial Day” is also understood. If you write an invitation, put the weekday and the date. Do not assume everyone still hears the old name as the federal three-day weekend.
