December global holidays
December global holidays are the December dates many countries already keep, not one world public holiday. Christmas Day is 25 December. Other December feasts use other rules and other clocks.
How it works
A month is a container, not a treaty. Governments close on the dates in their own labour tables. Churches keep the dates in their own liturgical tables. Families keep what they can reach. “Global” here means: these December squares show up in many countries, not that every country shuts on the same morning. A closed shop in one city and an open shop in another on the same civil date are both following their own lists.
Start with the rule, then print the number. A fixed civil date repeats every year. A lunar date walks. An astronomical date follows the solstice, not a saint. If you mix those rules you will set an alarm on the wrong night and then blame the month.
Fixed December dates many civil tables share
Christmas Day is 25 December on the Gregorian civil calendar used by most countries for business. In 2026 that date is Friday 25 December, 113 days from Thursday 3 September. In 2027 it is Saturday 25 December. Many countries close then. The United States does. So do the United Kingdom and others. Some Orthodox churches keep Nativity on 7 January on the civil calendar because they follow the Julian liturgical date; that is January, and it is a different row. Christmas Eve is 24 December, Thursday in 2026. It is a holiday eve in many places and a public holiday in some, not in all.
Boxing Day is 26 December in the United Kingdom and in several Commonwealth tables. In 2026 that date is a Saturday, and U.K. tables also list Monday 28 December as Boxing Day observed. St Stephen’s Day is likewise 26 December in several European church and civil tables. Kwanzaa runs from 26 December through 1 January, seven days, a U.S.-origin African American observance created in 1966 by Maulana Karenga. It is not a U.S. federal closing. St Nicholas Day is 6 December in Western churches, a Sunday in 2026. The Catholic solemnity of the Immaculate Conception is 8 December, a Tuesday in 2026, and a public holiday in some countries. Our Lady of Guadalupe is 12 December, a Saturday in 2026. Human Rights Day is 10 December, the civil anniversary of the 1948 Universal Declaration, a Thursday in 2026; it is a UN date, not a U.S. federal holiday.
Christmas Day: 25 December (Friday in 2026). Christmas Eve: 24 December (Thursday in 2026). Boxing Day / St Stephen’s Day: 26 December (Saturday in 2026). Kwanzaa: 26 December–1 January each year. St Nicholas Day (Western): 6 December.
Dates that move inside the same month
Hanukkah begins on 25 Kislev and lasts eight days, so the civil month can be late November or December. In 2026, 25 Kislev falls on 4 December; in 2027 it falls on 24 December. Lights follow sundown as the Hebrew day begins, not a noon office clock. Do not tattoo 25 December as Hanukkah. Some years they overlap. 2026 is not one of those years on this civil mapping.
The December solstice sits on 21 or 22 December. In 2026 the December solstice is 21 December. Dongzhi and other solstice observances follow that astronomy, not Christmas. Las Posadas in Mexican practice runs 16–24 December. New Year’s Eve is 31 December, a Thursday in 2026, a civic night in many cities and a public holiday only where a country says so; New Year’s Day itself is 1 January, which is next month.
December is a crowded waiting room. Name the feast before you name the suitcase. The month will not choose for you.
