December calendar

A December calendar is the grid for the last month of the year: 31 days, arranged in weeks. Use it to place remaining dates, year-end holidays, and the handoff into January. The weekday that December 1 falls on changes each year.

How it works

December always has 31 days. The calendar does not grow or shrink with the weather. What changes is the starting weekday and, with it, how the weeks line up. A month that begins on a Monday has a different shape of weekends than a month that begins on a Friday. The last day, December 31, is New Year’s Eve on the civil calendar, and the next square is January 1 of the following year.

Most printed and on-screen calendars show Sunday or Monday as the first column. Neither choice changes the dates. It only changes which column a given date sits in. If you compare two December grids and they look different, check the starting weekday of the week before you assume one of them is wrong.

December is month 12 in the Gregorian calendar. It follows November (30 days) and precedes January (31 days). Because the year ends here, planning in December often spans two years at once: finish what still belongs to this year, and mark what already belongs to the next.

What a December grid is good for

The month is crowded with year-end dates that people need to see in one place. A calendar does not tell you how to celebrate. It tells you which weekday a date lands on, how many weekdays sit between two events, and whether a deadline is before or after a public holiday in your country.

Count weekdays left in the year from today to December 31. See which weekday December 25 falls on, if that date matters to you. Place school breaks, travel days, and return-to-work dates on the same grid.

Mark January 1 on the following month so the year boundary is visible. Check whether a recurring monthly bill lands on a weekend this December. Holiday lists are local. A date that is a public holiday in one country is an ordinary workday in another. Use a December calendar as the map, then add the holidays that apply to your location rather than copying a list from a different country.

Reading the month without mixing years

Write the year on the calendar you are using. December 2024 and December 2025 are both 31-day months, but they do not share a weekday layout. Repeating “the first Monday in December” without a year is how meetings land on the wrong week. If you copy last year’s December plan, shift every date to the correct weekday for this year instead of copying the grid as a picture.

In the northern hemisphere December is a winter month. In the southern hemisphere it is a summer month. The calendar squares are the same. The daylight and the weather are not. If you are scheduling outdoor work, the grid still only gives you the date; it does not give you the sunset.

December is the only month that has to close the year and host next year’s plans in the same grid. When you need a span that crosses the new year, count into January instead of pretending December has extra days. December 30 plus three days is January 2 in a common sequence of dates, not December 33. The calendar’s job is to make that obvious.

Questions and answers

How many days are in December?
December has 31 days every year. It is not affected by leap years; those add a day to February, not to December.
Does December always start on the same weekday?
No. The starting weekday shifts from year to year with the calendar cycle, including the extra day in leap years.
Is December 31 always a weekday or a weekend?
It depends on the year. Look at the December calendar for that year. New Year’s Eve is always December 31; the weekday is not fixed.
