Days of the week japanese
Days of the week Japanese learners need are nichiyōbi, getsuyōbi, kayōbi, suiyōbi, mokuyōbi, kin'yōbi, and doyōbi: Sunday through Saturday. Each name is a weekday word, not a date of the month.
how many week days in the year
If “week days” means the seven named days, every year has all seven. If it means Monday through Friday, start from 52 weeks times 5, which is 260, then add the leftover dates that land on those five. A 365-day year adds one leftover. A 366-day year adds two. That is why the weekday count moves between 260 and 262 and why a memorised “260” fails some years.
Name the year before you name the tally. 2026 has 365 days and opens on Thursday, so it holds 53 Thursdays. The Monday–Friday total for 2026 is 261. Leap Day, when a year has one, is 29 February with a weekday of its own; it is one of the two leftovers, not a spare Sunday invented for rest.
Days of the week in Japanese still obey that arithmetic. Switching the labels to Japanese does not add a date and does not remove Friday. The vocabulary lesson and the leftover-day lesson are two layers on one calendar. Learn the words. Then count the year you actually mean.
Write whether the year has 365 or 366 dates. Write the weekday of 1 January. The remainder after dividing the length by 7 is how many names get a 53rd visit. Those names start at 1 January and walk forward through the leftovers.
Japanese days of the week, said in order
Japanese days of the week, from Sunday, are: 日曜日 nichiyōbi — Sunday, sun 月曜日 getsuyōbi — Monday, moon 火曜日 kayōbi — Tuesday, fire 水曜日 suiyōbi — Wednesday, water 木曜日 mokuyōbi — Thursday, wood 金曜日 kin'yōbi — Friday, metal
土曜日 doyōbi — Saturday, earth The days of the week in Japanese all share the suffix 曜日. Once you hear yōbi, you are hearing “weekday name,” not “holiday” and not “month.” The first character is the clue: sun, moon, then the five elements in the fire-water-wood-metal-earth order used for this set. English Tuesday does not look like fire. Kayōbi does. That is the mnemonic, not a weather forecast for Tuesday.
Romanisation varies: youbi, yōbi, you-bi. The spoken word is the same. Kanji is what a Japanese calendar prints. Hiragana spellings exist for learners. Pick one spelling for a study list and keep it for the session so the quiz key matches the card. Getsuyōbi is still Monday even when your English planner prints it in the second column.
How to put the words in a sentence
To say something happens on a given day, Japanese often uses the particle に after the yōbi word: 月曜日に, on Monday. For a habit, the same pattern can mean on Mondays. 今日は金曜日です means today is Friday. 明日は土曜日です means tomorrow is Saturday. You do not capitalise the Japanese words; kanji have no English-style case. Copying a capital M onto getsuyōbi is an English habit that the script does not need.
Short heads 月火水木金土日 appear in tables. A learner is safer with the full yōbi form until those heads are obvious. Do not invent English three-letter codes and expect a Japanese planner to show “Thu.” The planner will show 木 or 木曜日.
Weekend words sit beside the seven names: 週末 for the weekend pair, 平日 for the ordinary weekday run. Asking for the days of the week Japanese list is the seven yōbi words. Asking how many of those are workdays in a year is the leftover arithmetic above. Keep the flashcards and the tally on separate lines so a leap year does not look like new vocabulary.
Questions and answers
- What are the seven names, from Sunday?
- Nichiyōbi, getsuyōbi, kayōbi, suiyōbi, mokuyōbi, kin'yōbi, doyōbi.
- Do I capitalise kayōbi in Japanese?
- No. The kanji have no capitals. In romaji, treat it as a common noun unless it starts an English sentence.
- Does learning the Japanese names change how many weekdays a year has?
- No. The year still has 365 or 366 dates. Only the labels on those dates change.
